The college football playoffs are set. Four teams will do battle on the gridiron. Fans are hoping for good fun and a great time. But before that we got to see Steve Harvey’s Showtime at the Apollo reboot & Lebron James named S.I. sportsperson of the year. They’ve got game and remind us how not to be lame.

In his interview with Sports Illustrated James said “I dreamed of being Batman, of making the NBA, of buying a house for my mom, of being the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air—the Fresh Prince of Akron, it was as big as I could dream.” These guys find the biggest motivation to achieve what no one saw coming.

Harvey’s hitting the flow as the ‘hosted by’ king. He could host a ‘dog & pony show’ and make it work even with only animals in the audience. For us regular folks we should replace the word ‘hosted’ with our own strengths. That’s like ‘created or produced or led by’ without letting stuff go to your head.

James knows this as the world’s greatest after bringing an NBA title to his hometown Cleveland. His childhood story of some rough times is one that could be defined as ‘greatness by.’ So far he’s taken two teams to the highest level of achievement and he’s working on doing the same in his community.

So Harvey’s taking a ‘jump’ with his talk show from Chicago to LA. James is upping his teammates’ roles. They know the purest motivation we get at home, the office or the marketplace is being ‘loved by’ God and the folks in your circles. Plus, they could buy back the block and spot their name on it.

While Lebron James takes S.I. sportsperson loot. Both still see ways to flash their game. In reminding us how not to be lame.

In S.I. interview James looked back. On how his dream did stack. Wanting to be Batman, NBA pro and so. Buying house for mom as he’d grow. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, really Akron. As big as his dream was spun. Finding major motivation they’ve achieved. No one saw coming except those who believed.

Harvey’s right about hitting the flow. As ‘hosted by’ king on many a show. Could do a ‘dog & pony’ TV series as a beat. Even with only animals in audience seat. For regular folks, replacing ‘hosted’ word. With your own strengths, ya heard. Like ‘created by,’ produced or led. Without letting stuff go to your head.

James knows as world’s greatest player. After bringing NBA title as Cleveland slayer. Childhood story of rough times. Now worth lot more nickels and dimes. Best seen as ‘greatness by’ hero. His paycheck’s got many a zero. Taken two teams on championship ride. And supporting his community with love and pride.

So Harvey’s making talk show ‘jump’ to LA. Hoping that move from Chicago will pay. James upping his teammates’ roles. Watching them gel is food for the souls. Where purest motivation they know comes from God. At home, work, marketplace or on iPod. Plus, they could buy back block hook, line and sod.

Some folks have had enough of the Thanksgiving leftovers. Others have had enough of Kanye West. Fans are wondering if he’ll bounce back. Well Larry Wilmore did so as he’s back doing scripted shows with ABC. Lee Daniels is doing it too with a new TV show set to debut. Their 24K magic’s not done yet.

According to USA Today, Wilmore said in a statement “Disney took a chance on me as a young writer years ago and so I’m thrilled to return to the Mouse House. I hope my room still looks the same.” Wilmore and Daniels give us a kind of ‘brandorama feeling’ that might make you wanna up your game next year.

After an almost two year stint on Comedy Central, Wilmore got the boot. He’s best known as a writer and producer with show credits that include HBOs Insecure and ABCs Black-ish. The message from Wilmore and Daniels is in how they hustle their way, day after day until the next door opens and career goals pay.

Daniels has a new TV series for the breakout star in us. It’s a case of going after those ‘someday dreams.’ There’s no guarantee in life like death and taxes. But Daniels knows about having a ‘someday attitude’ to keep pushing & believing. He’s even getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to prove it!

So Wilmore’s show might have been cancelled but he’s ready to get back to what he loves. This includes writing/producing new projects, supervising others and mentoring new talent. It might seem like their time is spread thin but Wilmore and Daniels can relate to that ‘lovey dovey’ feeling you get when you ‘do you.’

So Wilmore might have gotten the boot. But he’s found new heights to shoot. Getting back to his old time sake. To mix passion and grow his stake. New projects and mentoring up-and-comers. Supervising tomorrow’s go-getters. Seems like a lot as dreams come thru. A ‘lovey dovey’ feeling so just ‘do you.’

Talking to Global Grind about a recent meme Washington said “Those who can do, do. Those who can’t, talk about those who can. Are you just one that sits on the sideline to talk about other people, or can you step up?” It may be one of the realest things said about mastering a skill or bringing dreams to the world.

For Rob & Chyna it’s a little bit of ‘remember the time’ when they first met (or did the humpty hump). Maybe they’ve moved their hook-up from ‘hot and heavy to good and steady.’ That’s why getting more out of a relationship or earning more props on the job takes shifting some things and putting in that work.

Is the ‘mannequin challenge’ blowing-up on social media? It’s the new craze after Halloween and before Thanksgiving. So Ciara might be getting ready now that she’s Revlon’s Global Ambassador. But it’s the ‘big brother challenge’ that’s got T.I. talking. They show us how tomorrows Hot Steppers take strides.

After Lil Wayne’s comments in a TV interview T.I. wrote “You have to get outta that bubble that you’ve been living in & get out here & educate yourself on what’s going on around US!!!” T.I. took a step back and Ciara took a step up to be on point. It’s the best way to move your game from learning to leading.

It’s as if TI’s message to Wayne was “bro it’s ok to get jiggy with it, but after a while you gotta get woke.” That’s true for breaking out of any kind of bubble. It’s a case of Weezy getting to see that you don’t have to know everything. But even while flexing his rap game he gotta know something about something.

Ciara is making her beauty pay and T.I. is making things plain. He’s pouring out his soul before it gets old. It’s like the elevator ride going from the ground floor to the penthouse. Madea is back in the building with the movie Boo. The tough-nosed, rabble-rousing character played by Tyler Perry returned to the silver screen. The show led weekend box office numbers yet again. Perry and Gabrielle Union are turning heads in Hollywood. He keeps surprising critics while she makes it look easy.

Appearing on the cover of Essence Magazine, Union talks about “Living your best life, taking control and rising above the drama.” These words could just as well describe Perry. They know a few things that ‘big timers’ never stop doing to toast it up. They’ve gone from rags to riches or rags to real and then top notch.

For Perry it’s been a matter of ‘never stop believing’ based on the blessings he’s been receiving. He didn’t become a writer, director, producer, or actor by accident. He remembers spending a lot of time working on his hidden gifts. Over the years, doors have opened up like a video game’s reveal of hidden rewards.

They keep moving up the charts by being students of the game. They never stop learning about their craft or taking new strides. Somehow they’ve figured-out how to ‘make it do what it do’ with different roles and goals. These moves take us to a place where stars are born, dreams are made and passion gets played.

When the stars align, it seems things work out fine! Just ask Cathy Hughes and Steve Harvey who’ve been doing it major. Harvey’s busy planning his next ‘sand and soul’ gig. Another weekend of NFL games with lots going on. Some eyes are on Colin Kaepernick for his on-the-field play and off-the-field cause. Plus Dak Prescott is having a breakout year as the Cowboy’s rookie quarterback. He might be the newest NFL superman, but Beyoncé fans know she’s their superwoman.

According to USA Today, Prescott’s teammate Barry Church said “What makes him so impressive is that he is calm and cool…he is smart…he is beyond his years and I am excited he is with us.” Maybe those words are true for Bey too. They know reaching the goal line is less about status and more about stats.

It’s a case of great ones showing poise before tipping their hats. Recently, Beyoncé had to keep things going during a concert while suffering an injury on stage. In the back and forth of taking care of business Prescott’s handling those intangible assets. He’s made a believer in his teammates and they’re in him.

He’s also using game skills to score points. Prescott broke Tom Brady’s record for most passing attempts before an interception to start a career. Whether with skill points, style points, life points or paycheck decimal points, the great ones keep moving closer to the goal line. This makes their performance bounce.

The hot topic in football is if Dak will have to step back when Romo returns. We’ll see how things playout before the DakPac goes whack. They might take cues from the BeyHive. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at age 83 is back on the Supreme Court. She ruffled some feathers over the summer but is trying to lay low. Also back is Jane Pauley as new host of CBS Sunday Morning. While Pauley is good for another round on TV, Tiger Woods says he’s not ready for a major golf tournament.

In a statement to fans Woods said “I will continue to strive to be able to play tournament golf. I’m very close, taking my game from the range to the course is the final hurdle, and with your continued support, I know I’ll get there.” He’s ready to get his groove back, but it’s gonna take more than a finger snap.

It’s getting kinda hectic as Woods went from top ranking to complete halt. But he’s pumped about taking his mojo from lame to game by not feeling defeated. After working day and night on his swing he hopes to return to past performances. He’s patiently focused on having power and magic again.

Pauley has had media ranking slips and slides too. In her mid-twenties she landed the co-host spot on NBCs Today Show. Since leaving the show there’ve been some lows and highs along the way. Now forty years later she’s got her groove back in a role that feels like going from last to having a wide-cast.

Pauley said to an AP writer “I was told that the word most consistently associated with my name was ‘authenticity.’ If they had said anything else, I would have gone ‘pooh.’ But authenticity? I said, ‘Yeah!’ For better or worse, I just didn’t know how to be anything but myself.” No matter what, that works every time.

What’s the difference between a movie inspired by Hollywood and one by Harlem? Well, it might be the score and plot. There may even be more realness in the back-story. That’s one reason why people are binge-watching Netflix. They’ll see Luke Cage & Jessica Jones characters streaming like hot superstars.

As a spinoff Cage is its own series. In talking about the writers, the show’s creator tells Time magazine “I called our writers’ room the Danger Room. When it came to ideas, ­everybody had their own power. There was beautiful conflict when it came to story.” They’re doing next level stuff and working as a tight squad.

In ‘X-men’ terms, Danger Room is the place where they train, fight and work out their powers. Mike Colter who plays Cage can relate. Born in SC, he spent time working-out his childhood dreams of becoming an actor. This took him from the ‘Low Country’ to the big screen in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby.

From a role on the Good Wife, he’s off to some game-changing. He’s turning the story of Cage into a socially-conscious entertainment vibe with a brand new feeling in a special way. He’s bridging the gap of his dreams, showbiz and impacting community. That’s useful for reaching higher like cranes in the sky.

The Harlem hook to the storyline makes Cage a homeboy superhero. He isn’t so hung-up on his power that he’s lost his street cred. In one sense his strength is unbreakable. But in another it’s relatable. He’s a good ol’ dude who’s come up the rough side of the road. The next stop will be teaming-up as Defenders.

Cage the spinoff making waves. A series bringing its own raves. Show’s creative team in Danger Room. Makes the action go zoom-zoom. Sharing ideas with their own power. Beautiful conflict in story for the hour. Doing next level stuff in their tight bod. Reminds us of days of the MOD Squad.

Danger Room in ‘X-Men’ terms. A place for the savvy and book-worms. To train, fight and work out some things. So that their powers deliver zings. Cage actor Mike Colter can relate. Similar lessons on his dream plate. On becoming an actor not before long. From ‘Low Country’ to Million Dollar Baby strong.

A role on Good Wife made us see. His chops not coming geek free. Now off to be about game-changing. With socially-conscious show script arranging. Brand new feeling in a special way. More surprises to pack and play. Bridging dreams, community and showbiz lanes. For stretching career like sky-high cranes.

The Harlem players and storyline hook. Makes Cage a homeboy with superhero look. Not hung-up letting power go to his head. Still maintaining much street cred. Just think how he’s unbreakable. But in other sense pretty relatable. Dude from rough side of road runners. Next stop teaming-up with the Defenders.

The fall TV season is jumping-off. Not too far behind is the NBA season. But Cookie Johnson, wife of Hall of Famer Magic Johnson is calling her own shots. So is Linkedin CEO Jeff Weiner even with being bought by Microsoft. Johnson and Weiner tell how passion and compassion have made them rock steady.

Weiner wrote to company employees “The Microsoft that has evolved under [CEO’s] leadership is a more agile, innovative, open and purpose-driven company. It was the latter point that first had me thinking we could make this work.” It’s one of the hardest things to explain about making it rain in biz so all can see.

Johnson’s doing the rounds for her new book. They’ve each worked on coming to grips and starting from scratch by going all in for a happier life. For them it’s doing something different in the game, creating something better in their lane and leaving something special on the trail. That’s what is, what is, what is!

What Weiner saw in Microsoft, Cookie saw in ‘Magic.’ As her book title suggests she was Believing in Magic. So she started a Jeans fashion line and Weiner wanted to make sure a merger of two companies would have the stars align. No one can take away what they’ve invested in themselves and their dreams.

Referring to ‘Magic’ Cookie told Oprah “On his side, he was building his business as he was getting bigger and bigger and bigger – so, it just all became about work for him.” Lessons they share say as much about living in the moment and walking on sunshine. It’s also doing what it takes to be best-in-class.
