Tiffany Haddish Says Tyler Perry Adds a Secret Sauce to Light a Fire Under His Biz Dreams and Project Teams

Remember when Tyler Perry appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon? He was promoting his then new movie Nobody’s Fool which featured Tiffany Haddish. He talked about how he gave Haddish a new Tesla as a gift for her emerging talent. He was offering encouragement on her dream journey.

Well, fast forward to recent events and you see how thing have played out. This time it’s Haddish explaining how the car was a material gift, but the best gift that Perry gives today is for us to dream bigger. That’s what he wanted guests at his recent studio grand opening to take away from the event.

Here are two showbiz players who’ll tell you they started out on what might seem like the wrong side of the tracks. Haddish went through a period of bouncing around foster homes and later living in her car. Perry went through a period of homelessness and disappointments before selling out his plays.

Now he’s 100% owner of the largest movie production studio in America, supposedly bigger than the three main Hollywood studios combined. Haddish is the newest host of the re-booted Kids Say the Darndest Things. Their stories remind us that it’s possible to turn lemons into lemonade.

Folks are still raving about the ‘glory to glory’ theme of the event. Some say it had a Met Gala feel. Others think it was like Emmys, Grammys and Oscars combined. Those events usually have guests leaving with a swag bag. But Perry’s guests might have left with a dream bag that had success tools like a:

  1. Compass

We know the many artistic sides of Perry. His work has traveled the world over. A compass is good for going in the right direction not just on the road but also the highway of life. It’s in going north, east, south and west in the direction of one’s purpose, calling, passion and dream guiding you to fulfill your destiny.

  1. Clock

They say it feels like time stops when passion is in play. You forget about time as in the clock edition and operate with time as in the divine edition. This way you’re not getting upset when things don’t work out on a rigid schedule. Perry’s seen both clock time and divine time at work that’s brought things to pass.

Haddish will tell you she wasn’t the best student in school. She writes in her book of how a certain teacher helped her with reading. With all the success coming her way now, she’s probably happy for a calculator to add-up the checks. It’s also a success tool to correctly calculate risks for the next-level rise.

She probably remembers days as a child having to wear certain hair clips. They were a staple back in the day. Today she’s excited about the video clip that came with the Perry invite. That’s another kind of memorable clip along with many others from the event that guests will cherish for years to come.

Perry says he remembers being invited by Oprah to one of her Legends Balls and thinking to himself, “why am I here?” Well it’s that personal reflection clip that inspired the past decade or more of his life. He’s grateful, mindful and fruitful. Maybe it’s a glimpse of life with unstoppable blessing on blessings.

The news these days feel like things are spinning out of control. There’s Russia, Supreme Court and mid-term elections on people’s minds. Desperate times call for funny measures. Maybe that’s how Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish see things. They’re turning comedy upside down like two night-school clowns.

They’re busy doing the promo tour for their new movie Night School. Written and produced by Hart, he also plays a major role in the flick. Hart’s comedy tour has been selling out large venues like a Rockstar. He’s doing what it takes to ‘Hustle Hart’ with ‘laugh-out-loud’ projects that have social media on fiya!

They can point to a big-screen movie that helped raise their film cred. Hart played a key role in Think Like a Man while Haddish was the breakout star in Girls Trip. They’re learning from each other in their careers. We can do the same in watching how they act like a showbiz player and think like a first-rate brand.

Some say it’s their likeability that’s got fans over-joyed. A lot can be said about the ‘lead story’ of their lives. It’s what’s hot that leads news. But there’s something to their ‘real story’ that reveals what makes them winners. It’s the ‘hustle love’ for what they do that has fans feeling good through and through.

A few years back, Hart heard that one of his fans who was a school bus driver was suspended for taking a selfie with him. When word got back he made a short video to the fan’s employer asking that she get her job back. Some of their authentic appeal is in making someone’s day along the way.

It’s as if they’re wired with a laugh-track mind. Plus, Hart’s school of success says to block out the noise to become your best self. Haddish jokes about feeling like Oprah’s voice plays in hear head as she gets up out of bed. They know even if you’re not taken seriously at first or seen as a threat, let folks see you as an asset.

Tip: Not everybody can sellout stadiums like a Rockstar. But at least with some ‘hustle love’ we can ‘press play,’ earn that pay and make someone’s day.

There’s ruffled feathers and choppy waters in Cavaliers land. When news broke that Kyrie Irving wanted out, some gasped like was heard in Congress. Not clear if the story will be fully told before he leaves. But on the ‘Girls Trip’ score, Tiffany Haddish and Regina Hall know about being a ‘trip without the baggage.’

They’re flying high with a box office hit. Haddish landed the role in breakout fashion. They really wanted a household name actor. According to Vibe she sent word back to the producers saying “Tell them I’ve had a name since 1979. I was born with a name. You tell them I need to come in.” It was like her ‘one shot.’

Her rise to fame is a case of how people take stock of their story to achieve new glory. After some rough years as a teenager trying to play mother to younger siblings, she realized that making people laugh was important to her. She crossed paths with Kevin Hart who set her mental wheels turning on setting goals.

She talks about the upward climb in her new TV special on going from Hood to Hollywood. What’s better, to be the star of the game or the star of the show? What if it’s a game and a show? That’s what fans might debate when watching their favorite TV game show or ball player. It’s what we see with the MLB All-Star Game and Judge Judy on deck. Judge & Judy bring more face time to their game time.

Judy just launched a new TV game show. According to the Queens Courier she said “So thrilled to embark on a new adventure with such fabulous partners; iWitness is a compelling game for those from 5 through 95.” Judge & Judy show-off their power to WOW as something coming from their sweet spot.

The premise of the show is based on the magic of memory and observation from watching a video clip. The goal is to match as best as possible what really stands-out in the video moment. The idea probably comes from Judy’s years of experience in hearing people give eye witness accounts from an event.

Meantime, there’s no confusing what happened at the MLB Homerun Derby with Judge taking the prize. His performance was so telling and compelling that the Baseball Commissioner said he could become the face of the game. As any sports writer might say, the dude is young, gifted and stacked (and that’s a fact).

Yea, everything is everything and when asked about the game or show folks were happy. But it seems the WOW factor is a kind of addictive quality their presence/essence has to offer. She’s been on the TV show for 20+ years and maybe he’s ready to take a long walk or let homeruns fly like cranes in the sky.

Who’s ready to take a wild ride on the loves train? Well, that’s not quite how things went at Wrestlemania. But there was love in the air as John Cena proposed to his girl. There was more happening in Orlando as Jimmy Fallon visited his Universal Attraction. Fallon & Cena made a fantasy ride in Orlando seem surreal.

The new ‘Ride Through New York’ at Universal is getting major reviews. Fallon told the NY Press that “It’s an idea I had seven years ago. I pitched it to the Universal Theme Park folks and they politely passed.” Now the ride is here, proving how a dollar, a dream and a destiny need good timing to come together.

After getting a ‘no’ from park execs on his proposal he went on doing other things. As the Tonight Show became his main thing, Fallon says he got a call back saying they were ready to rethink the idea. Three years have passed since and now Fallon has a show and his own ride as a ‘life-imitates-art attraction.’

While that happened in one part of Orlando, Cena had another kind of proposal for his long-time girlfriend after winning their Wrestlemania match. Thankfully he got a ‘yes’ on his first try. It felt like destiny as his mother was there to see him perform and propose. His good friend Fallon was also in the audience.

They know in pursuing a personal relationship or a professional dream that when you dig deeper and think outside of the box good things can happen. Maybe Fallon’s idea at the time seemed premature or presumptuous. But the ‘gods’ had it come together after a while with the right biz players and life partner.

Another big moment, another tear jerker! That could easily describe some of the highlights from this year’s Oscars. With more black nominees in the running, it was a more diverse picture. There were a few special moments too. Mahershala Ali and Ava DuVernay gave fitting toasts to folks that mean the most.

Ali did it while accepting his Best Supporting Actor award. DuVernay shared hers during a Red Carpet moment. On his wife’s support Ali said “I want to thank her for being such a soldier through this process and carrying me through it all.” Hey hot shot, that’s the look & stock of a leader, hook & heart of a winner.

DuVernay is one of the newest producers in Hollywood circles. As the brains behind OWN’s Queen Sugar, she’s giving new talent the opportunity to rise and shine. The thing about leaders like her is that they can separate the diamond from the dust. They know where the dust ends and the dynamo begins.

Ali has been working his way up the acting charts with a recent role in the movie Hidden Figures. His approach to the acting craft was drilled into him by teachers and industry mentors. By his own words of ‘serving the characters’ he shared the accolade and the hook for winning of turning lemons in lemonade.

When asked about advice Oprah has shared with her that stuck, DuVernay gave some ‘Pop Sugar’ saying Oprah once told her “When something’s not going your way, don’t think why is this happening to me, but think why is this happening for me.” No problem: think like a leader and have heart like a winner.

It was another weekend of NFL playoffs and Dallas got the boot. Many hoped this was their Superbowl year. Meantime, the women’s club was in full effect at the movie box office with Hidden Figures and Rogue One. Octavia Spencer & Felicity Jones are leading the way and lifting doubts in Hollywood.

In describing Rogue One to reporters, Jones said “These characters are all vulnerable. They’ve all had difficult times in their lives and they’re all finding strength in each other. It feels very appropriate for the times that we’re in.” Jones & Spencer show how real people pour out their hearts on making dreams fly.

The theme in a movie’s ‘leading lady’ role is well worn. Spencer, Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monae play strong characters that experienced some scorn. The power in their roles isn’t merely in the beautiful sexiness they bring, but in that vulnerability thing. Plus, they add some extra mustard to their mojo.

Jones who plays a breakout part in Rogue One confirms that the Star Wars franchise is as appealing to women as men. So whether a movie, job task or community project if it has visionary legs it will go places. There’s the kind of ‘it-factor’ that’s useful for turning up big crowds or making people reach for big things.

After a Hidden Figures White House screening, First Lady Michelle Obama said “They didn’t listen to those doubters. They did not listen to the haters — because they’re always out there.” The strongest voice we should be tuned to is where God speaks to and through us in a way that lines up the blessings.

The college football playoffs are set. Four teams will do battle on the gridiron. Fans are hoping for good fun and a great time. But before that we got to see Steve Harvey’s Showtime at the Apollo reboot & Lebron James named S.I. sportsperson of the year. They’ve got game and remind us how not to be lame.

In his interview with Sports Illustrated James said “I dreamed of being Batman, of making the NBA, of buying a house for my mom, of being the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air—the Fresh Prince of Akron, it was as big as I could dream.” These guys find the biggest motivation to achieve what no one saw coming.

Harvey’s hitting the flow as the ‘hosted by’ king. He could host a ‘dog & pony show’ and make it work even with only animals in the audience. For us regular folks we should replace the word ‘hosted’ with our own strengths. That’s like ‘created or produced or led by’ without letting stuff go to your head.

James knows this as the world’s greatest after bringing an NBA title to his hometown Cleveland. His childhood story of some rough times is one that could be defined as ‘greatness by.’ So far he’s taken two teams to the highest level of achievement and he’s working on doing the same in his community.

So Harvey’s taking a ‘jump’ with his talk show from Chicago to LA. James is upping his teammates’ roles. They know the purest motivation we get at home, the office or the marketplace is being ‘loved by’ God and the folks in your circles. Plus, they could buy back the block and spot their name on it.

Shaq O’Neal brought the house down at the recent Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He had folks rollin’ in their seats. T.D. Jakes showed up at AOL’s Build Forum to talk about his new daytime Talk Show. Shaq went from good to great while Oprah hopes Jakes can go from God to reaching His greatest.

Jakes said his Oprah takeaway on success in biz is to “Surround yourself with a team that accessorizes your talents and who use their gifts not to compete with you but to complete the mission of what you’re trying to do.” It’s why some people make it big in the game and others make it bigger than folks expected.

Since retiring from the NBA Shaq has gone on to become a major branding icon. He’s seen on TV in ads and on TNTs basketball pre-game coverage. One thing for sure about Shaq is that he’s got a secure personality. He’s played on a few teams over his career, even joining with those who were once his rivals.

Many know how Oprah reigned as Queen of daytime TV for 25 years. She left that gig to launch her OWN cable network. It’s not surprising then that Jakes would be a fit for her channel. Beyond preacher insights, he’s done many things in uplifting entertainment. Now he’s ready to push a new door of possibility.

No matter where he played, teammates say Shaq kept things loose. For Jakes, one of his breakouts was “Woman Thou Art Loosed.” Shaq getting inducted and Jakes continuing to be a factor is a testament to their ingenuity. Maybe it’s these optimistic rules of the game that make us gracious and catch greatness.

It’s been 25 years since Gatorade’s ‘Be Like Mike’ ad first ran. It became a catchy jingle and helped propel Jordan as a breakout brand. Soon we might see something similar for Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympic swimmer ever. Phelps & Jordan have had the game give them their own sports label.

According to CBS Sports, Jordan said about Russell Westbrook in a promo video “Thirty years ago, that’s me,” the attitude, trying to prove myself, showing so much passion for the game of basketball.” In those words you’ll find three things that regular folks and go-getters keep doing to become better at anything.

At first, Jordan and Phelps were just little scrawny kids. They weren’t as good in the early days as they became later in their careers. Then a glimpse of greatness flashed across their minds which kinda beamed their focus on growing their game. Phelps went on to win multiple championships, so did Jordan.

With Phelps we learn there were times he’d goof off. In one sense things started to come easy. But in another sense he was being pulled by distractions. Along the way he and Jordan found a fun and jazzy groove in their work ethic. Plus a renewed purpose changed their approach at practice and on game day.

When Jordan sees himself through Westbrook, you get a before-and-after snapshot of how to achieve top billing. He elevated his game and impact as a person. He gave all he had on and off the court. Westbrook can strive to ‘Be Like Mike’ (Jordan or Phelps) with no limit results beyond the stats & headlines.

A beam to focus on their gangsta leans. Took them from being a decent nobody. To champs and a major league somebody.

With Phelps goofing-off was an attraction. But also came other distraction. Things kinda flowed easy after a while. So work ethic went out of style. Then came a fun and jazzy groove. Helped them do more to bust the move. Renewed purpose in how they approached the game. Seen in how they’ve handled the fame.

Westbrook as Jordan in fast-break motion. That might stir a fan commotion. Before-and-after snapshot of how to achieve. Top billing in the game they’d leave. Elevating their play to new heights. And impact as a person for equal rights. Westbrook sure can be his best self. With no limit results on the awards shelf.
