Jay-Z and Serena Williams Achieved Some New ‘Firsts’ That Have Taken Them from the ‘Hood to Showing They Could

doc-live-headshot

There’s a battle brewing in the music biz that has Billboard Chart watchers counting streams and bundles. Those are the new benchmarks that artists and their management companies lock-in on to push music sales. It seems the standard is still under review so who’s album is #1 is not simply just a click away.

Back in the day Jay-Z didn’t have that problem. He started out selling albums the old-fashioned way. Some might say he started out from the bottom and now he’s on top of Forbes’ Hip-Hop list of highest earners. With a billion dollar empire, he’s the first rapper to reach that money mark.

Serena isn’t doing too shabby either. She recently became the first athlete to make the Forbes list of richest self-made women under 40. Her fortune isn’t tied to just earnings on the court. She’s got her hands in other Venture Capital investments as well as gigs in fashion and sports that crank-out the ‘Benjamins.’

After his days dealing on the streets, Jay-Z jumped into the rap game. His early work featured a song where he said, “I’m not a businessman,’ I’m a business, man!” That’s something he’s proven over the years with his stake in liquor, sport management and the Tidal streaming service.

So now with the Forbes list selections and social media mentions, they’ve reached a new level of star power (as if Jay wasn’t already ‘Hov’ in the eyes of many). This summer Serena will be gunning for her next ‘first’ on the tennis court. It’s the journey “from the ‘hood to showing they could” which reminds us of:

  1. Hidden Potential

An HGTV show with the same name looks at a house to see how a makeover can pull-out its hidden potential. Maybe that’s what Jay-Z saw in himself when he went from the streets to dropping beats. He did a career makeover based on some sense that he had hidden potential waiting to be unleashed.

  1. Game Skills

serenawilliams9

Serena started out playing tennis with her sister Venus. This wasn’t the normal sport for kids in the ‘hood. But with her father’s help, she practiced and practiced until she developed some impressive game skills. Now she’s got her eyes set on becoming the winningest Grand Slam player in tennis history.

  1. Dream Path

How do kids in the ‘hood hope to make it to the “big leagues?” Well sports and music have been paths many try to travel. But for those who’re gifted differently, the dream path is another option. That’s where you know there’s something inside of you, itching to come outside of you and be experienced by the world.

  1. Purpose Lane

Serena and Jay are not only on their dream path, they’ve found their purpose lanes. For Jay it’s his criminal justice reform efforts. For Serena, it’s her advocacy for women’s rights and other civic issues. Their purpose lanes have put them in the spotlight beyond what they do in the studio or on the court.

At this stage of their careers, they have no reason to be clout-chasing. They’ve shown themselves as proven winners and ‘Super Citizens.’ If we could get inside their heads and hearts we’d probably see how they used game skills to put hidden potential on a dream path and purpose lane with blessings returned.

Tip: Inside the heads and hearts of winners is a formula for success and evidence beyond a reasonable doubt for counting their blessings.

Talkback: Was Jay-Z really the first Hip-Hop billionaire or does that title belong to Dr. Dre?

Madea is back in the building with the movie Boo. The tough-nosed, rabble-rousing character played by Tyler Perry returned to the silver screen. The show led weekend box office numbers yet again. Perry and Gabrielle Union are turning heads in Hollywood. He keeps surprising critics while she makes it look easy.

Appearing on the cover of Essence Magazine, Union talks about “Living your best life, taking control and rising above the drama.” These words could just as well describe Perry. They know a few things that ‘big timers’ never stop doing to toast it up. They’ve gone from rags to riches or rags to real and then top notch.

For Perry it’s been a matter of ‘never stop believing’ based on the blessings he’s been receiving. He didn’t become a writer, director, producer, or actor by accident. He remembers spending a lot of time working on his hidden gifts. Over the years, doors have opened up like a video game’s reveal of hidden rewards.

They keep moving up the charts by being students of the game. They never stop learning about their craft or taking new strides. Somehow they’ve figured-out how to ‘make it do what it do’ with different roles and goals. These moves take us to a place where stars are born, dreams are made and passion gets played.

Talk about mindset, skill-set and jet-set, they’ve got it all. That’s why they’ll never stop twerking (well, that’s Madea talking). Perry recently bought an old Army Base to do more movie shoots. He might say he’ll never stop flexing his cred. Just like new stuff about to drop, flexing is how they make things pop.

Looks like Madea ready to come thru. Back in the building with movie Boo. Tough-nosed, rabble-rousing grandma. Returning to silver screen panorama. High box office numbers yet again. Leading list of top ten. Perry and Gabrielle Union turn Hollywood heads. He surprising critics, she looking fine on cover spread.

On Essence shoot she sounds like Obama. “Living best life, taking control, rising above drama.” Words for how Perry makes things stick. And reasons why they’re a solid pick. Few things ‘big timers’ never stop doing. To toast it up and be booming. Whether rags to riches or rags to real. Top notch in look and feel.

Perry’s takes is ‘never stop believing.’ Based on blessings he’s been receiving. A writer, director, producer, actor. Not by accident but by X-factor. Spent lots of time working on hidden asset. Turning nothing into a major facet. As doors opened he took award. Like a video game reveal of hidden reward.

Moving-up the charts as students of the game. Better as they go in fortune and fame. Learning the craft taking new strides. Sitting pretty in their luxury rides. Showing how to ‘make it do what it do.’ With different roles goals and wider view. Where stars are born, dreams made. Things jump-off, passion gets played.

Talk about mindset, skill-set and jet-set. They’ve got it all, you bet. To never stop twerking along the way. Sounds like something Madea would say. With old Army Base added to his stable. He’ll never stop being willing and credible. Just like new stuff about to drop. Flexing is how they make things pop.

When it’s time to move, it’s time to move! That could easily be turned into a funny statement by Kevin Hart. But this time it’s about his new campaign Move with Hart. He’s easily the hottest stand-up comic for sure. He and Ice Cube have a few secrets on what it takes for people to fall in love with your work.

In a Rolling Stones article Hart once said “I don’t give a s**t about critical consensus! They poll people after my movies, and I get A’s. When I get an F, I’ll take criticism.” Hart and Cube understood from an early age how being the underdog gives people a sense of having a seat at the table of their dreams.

These days Hart and Cube are on a California roll. Their recent movie Ride Along 2 is kicking butt at the box office. In the first weekend of release it knocked Stars Wars from the #1 spot. Who’d expect two dudes who came straight outta Philly and Compton would break the mold and rise to movie gold?

Their on-screen magic and market appeal isn’t just about spitting lines or their individual talent. Maybe it’s really about how they fill voids and holes. It’s like a football running back seeing the hole, breaking-out from the pack and scoring big. Plus, they’re good at reinventing, stretching and perfecting their role.

Hart keeps doing it and isn’t ready to get tired yet. His latest comedy tour features up-and-comers under his watch. His story, like others who’ve made it big, is clear. People fall in love with your work when they see you break a sweat and appreciate the difference between how you’re known and how you’ve grown.

When it’s time to move. Don’t snooze on that groove. Something only Kevin Hart could make witty. Even when it’s real pithy. This time ramping-up campaign to Move with Hart. Where couch potatoes get a new start. He and Ice Cube with secrets to lurk. On what it takes for people to fall in love with your work.

In Rolling Stones article he did kinda say. Doesn’t give a hoot about critics so don’t play. People polls after his movies give him A’s. So with F’s he’ll take criticism on those days. Hart and Cube must have learned from early age. That being underdog is a seat at the “dream-on dreamer’s” stage.

Seems like both are on a California roll. Watch them bust out and skip the highway toll. As a tag-team in Ride Along 2 movie scenes. Kicking butt at the box office screens. Knocking Star Wars from the #1 spot. These days they’re like Hollywood hot. Dudes straight outta Philly and Compton’s urban lot.

On-screen magic and market appeal. More than spitting lines or individual talent real. Finding ways to fill holes and the voids. Rising in the market like Apples and Androids. As seen in football player on the field. Breaking-out, scoring big with swag they wield. Reinventing, stretching, perfecting what their roles yield.

Hart keeps doing it flying in private jet. Not at all ready to get tired yet. Latest comedy tour some plan to catch. With up-and-comers under his watch. His story like others who’ve made it big. People fall in love with your work when it’s a jig. Break a sweat in how you’re known. Enjoy the ride by how you’ve grown.
