Folks are still talking about the first full weekend in 2017. Some Hollywood A-listers did it up from coast to coast. There was the big bash with the Obamas in D.C. and the big splash at the Golden Globes. In between it all, Ice Cube said he wants to start a pro league while Tracee Ellis Ross makes a confession.

In her Globes speech she said for Black-ish “It is an honor to be on this show..and to show the magic and the beauty and the sameness of a story and stories that are outside of where the industry usually looks.” Cube & Ross have a new year’s gameplan ‘start now:’ take your swag out the bag and head out the sand.

Ross was excited as a first-timer at the Golden Globes, first time nominated and attended. She won Best Actress in a Television Series Comedy. The last time that happened for a ‘sista’ was with Debbie Allen in 1983. So ‘last time’ doesn’t always mean last ever and ‘never before’ doesn’t always mean not possible.

So Cube’s excited about a 3-on-3 pro basketball league. According to USA Today he said “I started to look at three-on-three basketball and wondered, ‘Why isn’t this played on a pro level?’” That’s how ideas start. Plus, when you look for oil under the sand you might strike gold or for gold below the rocks find oil.

He also said “It’s the most normal form of basketball. And from there it was like, ‘Yo, why don’t we make this happen?’” This is major and he hopes to have it up-and-running by June. So for 2017 Ross tells folks no more drama or same ol’ mistakes as a ‘Stargirl.’ Cube tells folks no more half-stepping as a ‘Starboy.’

Folk still are a talking. First full weekend of ‘17 rocking. Hollywood A-listers did it up. From coast to coast non-stop. The Obamas D.C. big bash. Then the Golden Globes a big splash. In between Ice Cube made news. With idea he done fuse. For pro-league snack concessions. While Tracee Ellis makes confessions.

In Globes speech she made clear. Award makes for a great year. Proud to be on Black-ish show. Where magic and cultural beauty flow. Sameness in a story told. Greatness in stories bold. Outside of where industry looks. For padding revenue books. A gameplan to go ‘start now.’ What it takes to bring your wow.

Ross excited as first-timer. Among others she’s a Hot Stepper. First time to be nominated. Just as well as attended. Won Best Actress in TV Comedy nod. Under her breath it was like ‘Thank God.’ Last time Debbie Allen took the spot. Was when a sista had the lot. ‘Never before’ or ‘last time’ doesn’t mean a dot.

So Cube’s forming anew. 3-on-3 pro league about due. Looked around and wondered why. Then started aiming for the sky. That’s how ideas get started. Then sweetened and biz-coated. When looking for oil under sand. It’s all a stroke of the hand. Looking for gold below the rocks. It’s how you up your stocks.

Cube thinks it’s just normal stuff. Getting it going might be tough. Wants to make it happen then. Counting backwards from a ten. May be up-and-running by June. Hopes that’s not a bit too soon. So for 2017 Ross shares some heart. While Cube wants no more half-stepping start. To play your ‘Starboy, Stargirl’ part.

Madea is back in the building with the movie Boo. The tough-nosed, rabble-rousing character played by Tyler Perry returned to the silver screen. The show led weekend box office numbers yet again. Perry and Gabrielle Union are turning heads in Hollywood. He keeps surprising critics while she makes it look easy.

Appearing on the cover of Essence Magazine, Union talks about “Living your best life, taking control and rising above the drama.” These words could just as well describe Perry. They know a few things that ‘big timers’ never stop doing to toast it up. They’ve gone from rags to riches or rags to real and then top notch.

For Perry it’s been a matter of ‘never stop believing’ based on the blessings he’s been receiving. He didn’t become a writer, director, producer, or actor by accident. He remembers spending a lot of time working on his hidden gifts. Over the years, doors have opened up like a video game’s reveal of hidden rewards.

They keep moving up the charts by being students of the game. They never stop learning about their craft or taking new strides. Somehow they’ve figured-out how to ‘make it do what it do’ with different roles and goals. These moves take us to a place where stars are born, dreams are made and passion gets played.

Talk about mindset, skill-set and jet-set, they’ve got it all. That’s why they’ll never stop twerking (well, that’s Madea talking). Perry recently bought an old Army Base to do more movie shoots. What’s the difference between a movie inspired by Hollywood and one by Harlem? Well, it might be the score and plot. There may even be more realness in the back-story. That’s one reason why people are binge-watching Netflix. They’ll see Luke Cage & Jessica Jones characters streaming like hot superstars.

As a spinoff Cage is its own series. In talking about the writers, the show’s creator tells Time magazine “I called our writers’ room the Danger Room. When it came to ideas, ­everybody had their own power. There was beautiful conflict when it came to story.” They’re doing next level stuff and working as a tight squad.

In ‘X-men’ terms, Danger Room is the place where they train, fight and work out their powers. Mike Colter who plays Cage can relate. Born in SC, he spent time working-out his childhood dreams of becoming an actor. This took him from the ‘Low Country’ to the big screen in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby.

From a role on the Good Wife, he’s off to some game-changing. He’s turning the story of Cage into a socially-conscious entertainment vibe with a brand new feeling in a special way. He’s bridging the gap of his dreams, showbiz and impacting community. That’s useful for reaching higher like cranes in the sky.

The Harlem hook to the storyline makes Cage a homeboy superhero. He isn’t so hung-up on his power that he’s lost his street cred. In one sense his strength is unbreakable. But in another it’s relatable. He’s a good ol’ dude who’s come up the rough side of the road. The next stop will be teaming-up as Defenders.

The fall TV season is jumping-off. Not too far behind is the NBA season. But Cookie Johnson, wife of Hall of Famer Magic Johnson is calling her own shots. So is Linkedin CEO Jeff Weiner even with being bought by Microsoft. Johnson and Weiner tell how passion and compassion have made them rock steady.

Weiner wrote to company employees “The Microsoft that has evolved under [CEO’s] leadership is a more agile, innovative, open and purpose-driven company. It was the latter point that first had me thinking we could make this work.” It’s one of the hardest things to explain about making it rain in biz so all can see.

Johnson’s doing the rounds for her new book. They’ve each worked on coming to grips and starting from scratch by going all in for a happier life. For them it’s doing something different in the game, creating something better in their lane and leaving something special on the trail. That’s what is, what is, what is!

What Weiner saw in Microsoft, Cookie saw in ‘Magic.’ As her book title suggests she was Believing in Magic. So she started a Jeans fashion line and Weiner wanted to make sure a merger of two companies would have the stars align. No one can take away what they’ve invested in themselves and their dreams.

Referring to ‘Magic’ Cookie told Oprah “On his side, he was building his business as he was getting bigger and bigger and bigger – so, it just all became about work for him.” Lessons they share say as much about living in the moment and walking on sunshine. It’s also doing what it takes to be best-in-class.

Every day we get to watch history unfold. More often than not its best understood looking backward. But that’s not where we should look for Ava DuVernay. She’s lined-up a $100 million Disney film set to begin shooting this fall. DuVernay is shaking things up in Hollywood and Courtney B. Vance is watching.

This summer DuVernay was quoted in USA Today saying “It’s not the fact that a film can do well, it’s the fact that there’s a community around it, that there’s conversation around it, that a film can push a national moment forward.” She knows others came before her who were breaking glass and kicking…(that’s right).

It’s been a breakout year of sorts as she’s also the brainchild behind OWN’s Queen Sugar. She’s made it this far with the mantra of “do not settle.” Whether in career or relationship this isn’t about being desperate. It’s really about being determined to spark a greater level of awareness reaching new heights.

DuVernay wants to be the story-teller that helps us discuss topics that are tough to swallow. It’s taken her a minute to get to this level of notoriety. But she might be the first to remind us of how not to second-guess or to sellout on the mission. This means sticking to the script that will fulfill profit and purpose.

It’s not clear if DuVernay knows Courtney B. Vance. He took the Emmy for playing Johnnie Cochran in The People v. O.J. Simpson. Vance sees a shift happening in TV that should transfer to movies. He shared pride in his own wife Angela Bassett, showing he feels strongly about women who push it forward.

One thing for sure about Shaq is that he’s got a secure personality. He’s played on a few teams over his career, even joining with those who were once his rivals.

Many know how Oprah reigned as Queen of daytime TV for 25 years. She left that gig to launch her OWN cable network. It’s not surprising then that Jakes would be a fit for her channel. There it is…the return of the Macks! While some kids get set for new math, other folks can watch Michael Strahan & Steve Harvey. Over the summer there was a break from doing their shows. But Harvey kicked-off a new season with Simone Manuel on her Olympics race and Strahan joined GMA on the regular.

In ABC interview he said “I think we all get so tied up in what’s going on in work and all these other things that we forget that life is supposed to be fun. I try to bring that same attitude, as much fun and play you can bring to a job.” That’s what it means for them to connect with passion full-time and dreams full-speed.

It’s easy to lose count of how many gigs they got. Strahan does NFL Sunday on FOX. Then he’ll shuttle back to NY for his weekly GMA co-hosting duties. No wonder his book is entitled Wake Up Happy. You can’t run like this without loving what you do. These guys are sure to mix fun with getting back in the flow.

Harvey is no slouch either. When he’s not on syndicated radio, he’s cutting-up on his TV talk show. Then there’s Family Feud and Little Big Shots for extra measure. In between tapings he tries to share with his audiences a few nuggets from what’s on his mind. He too is raking in the dollars and sharing good sense.

They inspire us to keep it movin’. In a Huff Post Op-ed Harvey wrote “If you keep your faith… there is an appointed time for you and it’ll bust open for you. This journey we’re on isn’t about who gets there first, it’s about who hangs in there until the end.” As celebrity Hot Steppers they want to see folks living good!

There it is, enough jumpin’ jacks. Time for return of the Macks! Kids get set for new math class. Michael Strahan & Steve Harvey take a pass. Summer’s over from being on break. To audience members’ goals on their bucket. Raking in the dollars, sharing good sense. For extra measure boosting confidence.

They inspire folks to keep it movin’. If nothing else just keep on groovin’. Reminding us to keep the faith and jump. At the appoint time to get over the hump. Who knew that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz grew up in the projects? Well, that’s the story he tells in an online feature. It gives us a sense for why making money and being a force for good can go hand-in-hand. Schultz and James Corden seemed to have found themselves in unlikely dream jobs, but nailed it.

As Late Night host Corden once told the Wall Street Journal “In many respects it’s the dream job for me. I don’t know if it’s playing to my strengths. It’s more like ignoring my weaknesses.” Schultz and Corden know about that moment you feel like “it’s now or never” while others tell you “it’s not gonna happen.”

Corden is one of those “Brits turned Yankee.” He had doubts about taking the Late Night gig. He wasn’t sure about being up to the challenge. But he kept his nose to the grind with other things to perform on stage. It was one such occasion where a CBS exec saw him and made the decision to offer him the spot.

After some time, he eventually came to his senses. He went with the “It’s now or never” option. He’d get a chance to participate in the late night space. His show has now created cultural hooks as a Youtube sensation with the wildly popular “Carpool Karaoke.” Corden’s busy hosting and his team’s busy posting.

Schultz told the Huffington Post how his father-in-law said to him “It’s time you give up this [coffee] hobby and get a job.” But his wife who was the bread-winner in the family told Schultz “We’re going to follow these dreams that you have. We’re going to see this through.” So he was busy going for the big payback.

Prince Harry is coming to America yet again! This time it’s for the Invictus Games where wounded warriors compete in sports. The last time Harry was here TMZ photos had him in a bind. Simon Cowell is coming back to America too. So he and Harry made a deal with fans for shifting gears into a new grind.

Cowell joins the Judges Panel on America’s Got Talent (AGT). About his new role he tells the Hollywood Reporter “When you’re there, when you discover a star … you’ll never forget that moment.” They remind us of the best thing about having the most fun, games and value as a team player or business leader.

After spending 10 years in the British Army, Harry wanted to find ways to honor those he served with who were injured. So the idea of the Invictus Games was brought to life in 2014. While some might be dealing with a loss in their physical or mental condition, the event gives them a way to re-imagine their potential.

Harry hopes this will inspire people everywhere on expanding their options. For Cowell, his return to the American scene is a kind of professional reboot. He’s the creator/producer of AGT and many other talent programs. He feels it’s some good times wishing on a star, to follow dreams where they are in going far.

The thing that makes them similar yet different is their approach to reinventing themselves. Harry has changed the perception since his Vegas visit, while Cowell continues to change the game in TV ratings. It’s a lesson for pros, regular Jane’s & Joe’s on those special fun moments at work or in everyday roles.
