Every day we get to watch history unfold. More often than not its best understood looking backward. But that’s not where we should look for Ava DuVernay. She’s lined-up a $100 million Disney film set to begin shooting this fall. DuVernay is shaking things up in Hollywood and Courtney B. Vance is watching.

This summer DuVernay was quoted in USA Today saying “It’s not the fact that a film can do well, it’s the fact that there’s a community around it, that there’s conversation around it, that a film can push a national moment forward.” She knows others came before her who were breaking glass and kicking…(that’s right).

It’s been a breakout year of sorts as she’s also the brainchild behind OWN’s Queen Sugar. She’s made it this far with the mantra of “do not settle.” Whether in career or relationship this isn’t about being desperate. It’s really about being determined to spark a greater level of awareness reaching new heights.

DuVernay wants to be the story-teller that helps us discuss topics that are tough to swallow. It’s taken her a minute to get to this level of notoriety. But she might be the first to remind us of how not to second-guess or to sellout on the mission. This means sticking to the script that will fulfill profit and purpose.

It’s not clear if DuVernay knows Courtney B. Vance. He took the Emmy for playing Johnnie Cochran in The People v. O.J. Simpson. Vance sees a shift happening in TV that should transfer to movies. He shared pride in his own wife Angela Bassett, showing he feels strongly about women who push it forward.

Every day we get to watch. History unfold like hopscotch. More often than not it’s in looking back. But that’s not how DuVernay leads the pack. Line-up $100 million Disney flick. More than just being a hot chick. Shaking things up on Hollywood drive. Courtney B. Vance watching her come alive.

Quoted this summer in USA Today pages. About rolling through movie stages. The fact that a film can do well. With community around to help it swell. Conversation that keeps buzz grooving. With national moment forward moving. Knows others came before breaking glass. And doing enough kicking of.. (right!)

A breakout year in full view. For her and film making crew. Brainchild of OWN’s Queen Sugar hit. Made it thus far with “do not settle” or quit. In career or with your honey boo. Not being desperate but being true. Determined to see awareness sparking. Reach new heights and forget the skylarking.

DuVernay with new day story-telling. Topics that are tough and compelling. Her notoriety rising like the sun. In between eat, pray and have fun. Sure to remind folks not to second-guess. Just think about the big ‘S’ on your chest. Not to sellout either on the mission. Stick to script for profit, purpose and vision.

Who knows if DuVernay & Vance have met. There’s still some time yet. He took Emmy for People v. O.J. Simpson role. Playing Johnnie Cochran in heart and soul. Vance sees shift in TV programming. Should transfer to movie distributing. With pride for Angela Bassett his wife. Women who push it forward in life.

Shaq O’Neal brought the house down at the recent Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He had folks rollin’ in their seats. T.D. Jakes showed up at AOL’s Build Forum to talk about his new daytime Talk Show. Shaq went from good to great while Oprah hopes Jakes can go from God to reaching His greatest.

Jakes said his Oprah takeaway on success in biz is to “Surround yourself with a team that accessorizes your talents and who use their gifts not to compete with you but to complete the mission of what you’re trying to do.” It’s why some people make it big in the game and others make it bigger than folks expected.

Since retiring from the NBA Shaq has gone on to become a major branding icon. He’s seen on TV in ads and on TNTs basketball pre-game coverage. One thing for sure about Shaq is that he’s got a secure personality. He’s played on a few teams over his career, even joining with those who were once his rivals.

Many know how Oprah reigned as Queen of daytime TV for 25 years. She left that gig to launch her OWN cable network. It’s not surprising then that Jakes would be a fit for her channel. Beyond preacher insights, he’s done many things in uplifting entertainment. Now he’s ready to push a new door of possibility.

No matter where he played, teammates say Shaq kept things loose. For Jakes, one of his breakouts was “Woman Thou Art Loosed.” Shaq getting inducted and Jakes continuing to be a factor is a testament to their ingenuity. Maybe it’s these optimistic rules of the game that make us gracious and catch greatness.

Doing it in the Oprah flow. Shaq went from good to great. Oprah hopes Jakes puts fresh greatness on his plate.

There it is…the return of the Macks! While some kids get set for new math, other folks can watch Michael Strahan & Steve Harvey. Over the summer there was a break from doing their shows. But Harvey kicked-off a new season with Simone Manuel on her Olympics race and Strahan joined GMA on the regular.

In ABC interview he said “I think we all get so tied up in what’s going on in work and all these other things that we forget that life is supposed to be fun. I try to bring that same attitude, as much fun and play you can bring to a job.” That’s what it means for them to connect with passion full-time and dreams full-speed.

It’s easy to lose count of how many gigs they got. Strahan does NFL Sunday on FOX. Then he’ll shuttle back to NY for his weekly GMA co-hosting duties. No wonder his book is entitled Wake Up Happy. You can’t run like this without loving what you do. These guys are sure to mix fun with getting back in the flow.

Harvey is no slouch either. When he’s not on syndicated radio, he’s cutting-up on his TV talk show. Then there’s Family Feud and Little Big Shots for extra measure. In between tapings he tries to share with his audiences a few nuggets from what’s on his mind. He too is raking in the dollars and sharing good sense.

They inspire us to keep it movin’. In a Huff Post Op-ed Harvey wrote “If you keep your faith… there is an appointed time for you and it’ll bust open for you. This journey we’re on isn’t about who gets there first, it’s about who hangs in there until the end.” As celebrity Hot Steppers they want to see folks living good!

There it is, enough jumpin’ jacks. Time for return of the Macks! Kids get set for new math class. Michael Strahan & Steve Harvey take a pass. Summer’s over from being on break. After visit to the ocean or the lake. Harvey kicked-off new season on Olympics race. Strahan joined GMA as a regular in the place.

In ABC interview he once said. Not to let work and stuff drive us dead. Tied-up in the goings on at the job daily. Forgetting life’s supposed to be fun really. Harvey’s got some get-up too. No slouch like animals tend to do. When not radio then it’s TV talk. There’s Family Feud and the Little Big Shots walk. In between he tries to share a nugget. To audience members’ goals on their bucket. Raking in the dollars, sharing good sense. For extra measure boosting confidence.

They inspire folks to keep it movin’. If nothing else just keep on groovin’. Reminding us to keep the faith and jump. At the appoint time to get over the hump. Some celebs take time to get sexy with it on the red carpet. They can strut their stuff and let lots of parts hang-out. But for Beyoncé she keeps upping the ante as an Entertainer. She’s now become the winning-est artist in VMAs history. On the show she had her formation in place which was good enough for fans.

Now Rihanna’s acceptance speech might remind us of a quote seen in the Southside with You movie. It was Ellen Johnson who said “The size of your dreams must always exceed your capacity to achieve them.” After a breakout performance, it’s how the best of the best keep their dreams going for more.

Bey showed-up on the carpet with her posse along with daughter Blue Ivy. It was a case of “like mother like daughter” in matching outfits. Before the evening was done she had made multiple wardrobe changes. From start to finish it was just Bey being Bey as a maven in fashion sense and work style.

Even ABCs Good Morning America got into Bey as a social media trending phenomenon. They saw how over a million tweets were posted in about an hour. It was a 16-minute set that rocked the stage and brought down the house. But even after all that she still had game left and didn’t seem out of breath.

So the rest of Johnson’s quote says “If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.” Beyoncé went from southern girl to Queen Bey. Rihanna grew her Bajan roots to being RiRi. Al Roker may no longer be trending but recently he became a big Internet sensation. After more detail came out from the Ryan Lochte story, Roker wasn’t having it. While Lochte was cleaning up his story Allyson Felix was cleaning-up on the track. She schooled Lochte on what it takes to have amazing grave.

Leading up to and at the Olympics Felix had a series of gut-wrenching setbacks. In a recent tweet she wrote “When you feel broken. When you have nothing left to give. Remain faithful. Keep fighting. Joy comes in the morning.” She gave us 3 options for flashing A+ swagger in a performance crunch.

Felix missed-out on qualifying for the 200 meters at the US trials. She then lost the 400 meters Olympic final by a hair. Both times she was beaten at the line by a falling runner. She has a template for handling adversity. It’s in forgetting those things which are behind and pressing towards the mark of a champion.

Even when they dropped the stick in the 4X100 heats, Felix called on some ‘smile diplomacy.’ This pushed her teammates to finish the race before issuing a protest. If they hadn’t completed the initial race, they wouldn’t have had another chance. In the finals, the squad blew away the rest of the field.

When asked by the Today Show about how she moved from feeling devastated, Felix showed true character. “You’re going to have obstacles. There’s going to be adversity. Let your spirit shine through.” She displayed humility in ways that helped her turn a surprise setback into a history-making comeback.

Why chase women or waterfalls when you can chase destiny? That’s a question Usain Bolt might have asked (get back to that in a moment). Other major Rio headlines include how the U.S. women are kicking butt. It’s a great story of what it took Simone Manuel and Ibtihaj Mohammad to become barrier breakers.

At the post-event presser Manuel said “The title ‘black swimmer’ makes it seem like I am not supposed to be able to win a gold medal – I work as hard as anybody else and I love the sport and I want to win, just like everybody else.” Here are 2 more reasons why goals can T-up talent, D-up dreams and F-up futures.

Manuel is the first African-American to win gold in Olympic swimming. For Mohammad who won bronze in fencing, she’s the first to win a medal wearing the Hijab head scarf of her Muslim faith. They have a lot to say about breaking through the noise, the no’s and the ‘it’s never been done before’ writings on the wall.

They’re ‘first-ever’ winners who add discipline, build determination and chart destiny to D-up dreams. They know first-hand how to fame-up one’s future and fortunes. It’s the grind of working through some goals that allowed them to T-up their unique talents. This formula is true whether for women or men.

Mohammad might agree with Manuel who said “I hope I can be an inspiration to others so this medal is for those who come behind me and get into the sports and hopefully find the love and drive to get to this point.” Like Bolt, barrier breakers ‘change their name’ (or the game) in how they’re known or remembered.

It’s been 25 years since Gatorade’s ‘Be Like Mike’ ad first ran. It became a catchy jingle and helped propel Jordan as a breakout brand. Soon we might see something similar for Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympic swimmer ever. Phelps & Jordan have had the game give them their own sports label.

At first, Jordan and Phelps were just little scrawny kids. They weren’t as good in the early days as they became later in their careers. Then a glimpse of greatness flashed across their minds which kinda beamed their focus on growing their game. Phelps went on to win multiple championships, so did Jordan.

With Phelps we learn there were times he’d goof off. In one sense things started to come easy. But in another sense he was being pulled by distractions. Been 25 years since Gatorade ad. ‘Be Like Mike’ went longer than fad. Catchy jingle before Mickey D’s ‘I’m Lovin’ it.’ Propelled Jordan to breakout brand summit. Soon to see the same for Phelps the human fish. He can sell dreams and greatest wish. Game gave them sports label. Best-of-the-best in their stable.

So Jordan had a rewind. From early days in his career grind. Seeing himself in Westbrook’s attitude. Trying to reach superstar altitude. Showing so much passion for scoring. Page Six says Tyler Perry had some downtime in Denmark at a Beyoncé concert after flying staff members on his jet. Wade said in an ESPN interview “I respect Pat Riley to the fullest for what he’s done in this game, you know, drafting me, when a lot of people didn’t believe I was going to be as great as I’ve become.” As ‘baller & banker’ they share four surprising benefits of turning passion into hustle and hustle into passion.

Perry’s story of going from ‘homeless to honcho’ is known among fans. He’s taken his hustle for Stage Plays and turned it into his own studio passions. If you’re a Comic Book reader you know that Brie Larson is part of the ComicCon family. If you’re a MLB fan you know that Mike Piazza was just inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was just as exciting hearing that Larson would be the next Captain Marvel. So Piazza might think, ‘Me too, so good, I got you!’

According to the NY Daily News, his batting coach said “Mike had something you couldn’t teach – he had power and power takes time to develop. That’s what he needed, time. I wanted to make sure he got it.” Piazza is real proof for not quitting along the way before the right people hear what you have to say.

He started-out as a minor league player with the Dodgers’ farm club. Not much might have been expected as he was picked at the bottom of the pack in the draft. Piazza went on to have a stellar career by working hard on his batting stroke. He came to know that skill mastery has a certain learned timing.

One day at practice he overheard some ‘trash talking’ and was discouraged. He kinda became tuned-out to the game he loved. But after being pulled aside and getting some tough-love from his coach, Piazza re-grouped. This self-check moment caused him to be more tuned-into going from good to great.

Many were pleased when they heard Larson would be the next Captain Marvel. She’s already getting thumbs-up from her fans. A time others remember was Piazza hitting a homerun in the 8th inning of the first MLB game after 9-11. They show us how dreaming-up & teaming-up are a preview for beaming-up.

Feeling sure he’d rise to the next stage. Proof for not quitting along the way. So folks hear what you have to say.

First MLB game after 9-11 bigger than fun. Showing how dreaming-up with a team. Before rising to the top as the cream.

Two weeks ago a Compton teen took off in a single engine plane to fly around the U.S. He’s back home now after doing just that. In two weeks the world’s attention will put the Rio Olympics on the radar. It’s clear that Isaiah Cooper & Usain Bolt can fly, when you check the record for how they blazed new trails.

Cooper and Bolt shared how they put their goals in flight. Bolt told Foot Locker’s Eastbay Magazine “I have to really push myself to make sure to stay in the shape I want to be in when the time comes.” These guys give us two stories on how the next level of many things starts with the three laws of project rising.

At 16, Cooper’s in the news as the youngest African-American to achieve this feat. But he remembers being on a path in life that wasn’t productive. The shift came about from visioning what could be. He avoided self-destruction by pushing the right buttons. That’s a good thing to learn as a budding pilot.

Who knows, they might have similar experiences when in flight. For Bolt it happens somewhere around 60 meters. Commentators like to say that his top-end speed got him cruising. Whether on the track, in the cockpit or at the office, they know this game time ‘cruising feeling’ means having passion at top-end.

Bolt has a big task ahead, hoping to make history by winning the sprint events at a third Olympics. Cooper also has sights set on new heights. In two years he hopes to be the youngest to fly around the world. As Bolt chills in the tropics he reminds us “If you put the work in, it will show at the end of the day.”

Cooper and Bolt put goals in flight. Got people saying Alright Alright! Bolt knows he’s gotta keep pushing. To be in shape for world-class running. So that when the time to perform is here. He can turn on the jets and go there. Two stories on how next-level steps get rolling. Kinda starts with three laws of project rising.

A 16 year-old in the news is Cooper. Doing something that makes him super. Youngest African-American to achieve this feat. Come-on Mr. DJ, pump up the beat. Flashback to times of being un-productive. Now on a path of vision constructive. Pushing right buttons as a pilot avoids the destructive.

Bolt & Cooper share feelings of gold. With stories that get told and sold. For Bolt it’s around the 60-meter mark. For Cooper it’s by the cloud-line dark. Top-end speed got them cruising. To a place of the after-burning. Whether on track, in cockpit or office space. That ‘cruising feeling’ means passion’s in its place.

It’s a big task ahead for the sprinter. Hoping to make history in Brazil’s winter. By winning events three Olympics in a row. While Cooper sets sights on higher air flow. Fly around the world at age 18 or so. Will make him youngest ever amigo. As Bolt chills in the island sun. Putting in the work before end-of-day fun.
