Flow Nation: The Secret Sauce for Love, Luck and Living Large That’s Got More Flava. Get Some Here!

doc_lg

What do Kevin Hart and Steve Harvey have in common? They made their names in comedy. How about DJ Khaled and Charlamagne Tha God? They made early waves in radio. But there’s something else they all have in common: ‘finding flow.’ It’s the thing that gets us up in the morning even if we don’t know it.

Over the past year or so they all published books telling their story of love, luck and living large. They might have taken different roads to glory but seem to share a common theme of going from humble beginnings to becoming pop culture icons. In a sense, finding flow got turned into their awesome sauce.

awesome-sauce

So what does this really mean in the regular world? Whether it takes an alarm clock (or not) to wake us up, the thing that gets us up and moving is the idea of powering our flow. This could be growing in areas of ambition, taking social action or experiencing life’s moments of adventure and pure satisfaction.

That’s certainly the case when you read the stories of Harvey, Hart, Khaled and Charlamagne. Plus they shared personal examples of getting a ‘heavenly assist’ from someone along their path. They got a break in a phone call that was unexpected, an opportunity that was unheralded or situation that was unscripted.

One of the lessons in their stories on powering flow starts by putting passion where your mouth is, purpose where your heart is and pain where the truth is. Things we give voice to most or face up to tell us who we are, what we love and care about. These become stronger from a place that’s close to the heart.

The way they handled setbacks as well as my own story are reminders that finding & powering flow can happen from a brush with failure or a stroke of faith. In my case it was from hosting a radio show on a college station. While I was on air someone decided to pull the plug which interrupted the broadcast.

At that moment I decided not to fight back but to go way back and apply a stroke of faith. This made me learn more about the ‘Joseph story.’ His dream helped me see my own gifting and calling. Sometimes finding/powering flow means appreciating the people, places, pitfalls or pathways that confirm your story.

In these major keys we realize how not to let mistakes or other people’s human faults be our halts. Each of the icons has a story to tell of how they changed their luck, made a buck or got a relationship unstuck. Through the ups and downs they were simply trying to turn flow into reaping the good they would sow.

We enjoy artists when they perform with flow-motion. This brings together ‘lyrics and groove’ in a way that rocks. It’s fun when athletes at work or play get to deliver flow-magic. We cheer them for how they inspire us towards greatness. That’s the feeling we can hope for each day from living large in a flow nation.

Imagine how a brook becomes a stream or a stream becomes a river that leads to the ocean by finding flow. Or as a car goes from zero to 60 on the highway it finds its flow with the rest of traffic. Powering our flow takes us from zero to 60 or from feeling less to feeling worthy in the low or high tides of life’s ocean.

Tip: “Powering your flow means putting passion where your mouth is, purpose where your heart is and making things pop where your genius is.”

A New Way to Shine with Highlights, Insights and Media-bites that’s Exciting (Old-School Flava)

Why chase women or waterfalls when you can chase destiny? That’s a question Usain Bolt might have asked (get back to that in a moment). Other major Rio headlines include how the U.S. women are kicking butt. It’s a great story of what it took Simone Manuel and Ibtihaj Mohammad to become barrier breakers.

At the post-event presser Manuel said “The title ‘black swimmer’ makes it seem like I am not supposed to be able to win a gold medal – I work as hard as anybody else and I love the sport and I want to win, just like everybody else.” Here are 2 more reasons why goals can T-up talent, D-up dreams and F-up futures.

Manuel is the first African-American to win gold in Olympic swimming. For Mohammad who won bronze in fencing, she’s the first to win a medal wearing the Hijab head scarf of her Muslim faith. They have a lot to say about breaking through the noise, the no’s and the ‘it’s never been done before’ writings on the wall.

They’re ‘first-ever’ winners who add discipline, build determination and chart destiny to D-up dreams. They know first-hand how to fame-up one’s future and fortunes. It’s the grind of working through some goals that allowed them to T-up their unique talents. This formula is true whether for women or men.

Mohammad might agree with Manuel who said “I hope I can be an inspiration to others so this medal is for those who come behind me and get into the sports and hopefully find the love and drive to get to this point.” Like Bolt, barrier breakers ‘change their name’ (or the game) in how they’re known or remembered.

Why chase women or waterfalls. When chasing the sky is where duty calls. A question in the mind of Usain Bolt. Something to motivate his Olympic jolt. Other Rio highlights on the wire. Where U.S. women are girls on fire. Kicking butt and taking stock. Is how Manuel and Mohammad break barriers and rock.

At post-event presser chat. Manuel shared feelings without a spat. As ‘black swimmer’ seems a bit weak. Where her winning made to seem bleak. Works hard as any lover of the game. Wants to win just like every other big name. Two more reasons why goals help us sail. Even after coming back from a near fail.

Manuel first black to win gold. Hopes in swimming that’ll soon be old. Mohammad takes the bronze medal place. With Hijab-wearing scarf across her face. Has a lot to say about breaking thru noise. And how it took doses of poise. Some no’s that might make peeps fall. ‘Never been done before’ writings on the wall.

‘First-ever’ winners add discipline to the mix. Then build determination with the fix. Charting destiny to D-up dreams. On work or playtime teams. Knowing first-hand what it takes. To flame-up future fortunes & T-bone steaks. The grind of working through goals thick & thin. True for brothas or sistas on success spin.

Mohammad & Manuel might agree. Good things in life set talents free. Hoping to inspire and connect. With those in the city or urban Project. In finding love and drive to the end. Going where they don’t break but bend. Like Bolt, barrier breakers are better than average fare. By being known for the fruits they bear.

Wade did a pass-thru in Chi-town. Where his early days went down. As newest trade to NBA Bulls team. He’s ready to blow-off some steam. Perry takes downtime visit to Denmark. At Beyoncé concert partying after dark. Flying staff on his private jet. Rollin’ in style like the jet-set. Living large, Wade’s not done yet.

Tells ESPN he’s got mad respect. For Pat Riley seeing him as a draft prospect. And what he’s done in this game. In creating stars, fortune and fame. When peeps thought he’d miss-out. Great as he’s become without a doubt. As ‘baller & banker’ they hit it big. Passion into hustle and hustle into feel-right jig.

Perry once homeless for a while. As honcho now top of the pile. A hustle for Stage Plays is his lane. Turned into studio passion gain. Wade after 13 years with the Heat. Moves on to a new beat. Where hoop dreams make him a winner. On-the-court hustle or prime rib dinner. Giving back to those feeling thinner.

TLC channel and Perry in sync. With scripted TV drama their new link. Spreading his wings and reaching higher. Building his brand as producer, director and writer. With passion & hustle in the mix. Good chance for bonus moment tricks. To be expected without the guilt. Wade’s now with the house that Jordan built.

Theme:–The Year of ‘Uppertunity’ – Get Lifted!”
With Higher Hopes, Bolder Dreams and Greater Teams (Old-School Flava)

After 16 years hosting The Daily Show, Jon Stewart called it quits. He’s stepping away to do new things. On the flipside, Usher and Alicia Keys want folks to not quit. He’s focused on a lower dropout rate, while she’s on keeping it real. Stewart changed the game but Usher and Keys want to change the players.

The New York Times says Stewart’s legacy “Challenged journalism in the public arena for the responsibility of educating adult Americans on the truths of their day.” Usher tells the Huffington Post that for him it’s about inspiring kids to find their spark, be entrepreneurial and give back to their community.

Stewart did for his audience what Usher wants to do for students. Their message is about how to shuffle the deck of their talent and thinking. It’s about elevating their hustle by loving something with a sense of purpose. In so doing, both have increased their shine which is an important lesson for young and older.

They are among the winners and leaders who rock the house and climb the charts. Stewart’s show was a mix of comedy, politics and journalism. It was traditional news and contemporary views, sort of like how Usher and Keys’ music are a mix of old-school and new-school. Their success-combo is in yin and yang.

Usher plans to double the number of students in his “New Look” project until “We’re One World, Powered by Service.” In his parting words Stewart said “Chaos can’t sustain itself. It never could.”  In a way, they remind us that ‘upgrading you’ takes embracing service, ongoing learning and a passionate lifestyle.

After 15 years hosting Daily Show. Jon Stewart felt it was time to go. Calling it quits on the same night. As the GOP debate fight. While Usher and Keys put folks in the know. Saying don’t quit or hideout on the low. Want to lower the dropout rate. As Stewart changed the game, they’re changing young folks’ plate.

New York Times talks about Stewart’s stature. A legacy of challenging the journalism specter. Believes it should educate on truths of the day. Giving citizen-America picture of a better way. Usher tells media it’s about spark and entrepreneurial spirit. So that kids flex their mojo and come with it.

Jon did for fans and his market standing. What Usher and Keys want for talent and thinking. A message about how to shuffle the deck. And to raise the roof for the heck. Elevating hustle & flow to heights above. With a sense of purpose for something they love. More color like a butterfly and grace like a dove.

They who rock the house as winners. Those who climb the charts as leaders. Stewart’s show a comedy-politics mix. And a pinch of today’s journalistic fix. Dabbling in traditional news. Showcasing pundits and contemporary views. UsherKeys’ old-school/new-school sound. A ‘yin yang’ success-combo to be found.

Usher to double students in the group. Teaching them good stuff rich like chicken soup. His “New Look” project built to persist. With “We’re One World, Powered by Service” gist. Stewart signs-off doing what he should. Saying “Chaos can’t sustain itself, it never could.” Telling folks to ‘upgrade you’ even in the hood.
