Lebron James and Allyson Felix Share Something in Common that’s Less About Speed and More About ‘Flowe’

doc-live-headshot

The Grammy nominations are out and a bunch of first-timers top the list. It seems Lizzo, Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish are the new faces of pop music. Lizzo leads the way with eight nods while Nas X and Eilish scored six nods. It’s their first time being nominated and represent a kind of ‘next gen’ Grammy class.

Some pop culture watchers say it’s becoming less about album sales and more about music streams as a gauge for how fans are listening. That’s the situation in the music business while in sports there’s a similar debate. As new athletes come on the scene how do veteran athletes stay relevant in the game?

Carmelo Anthony faces that question as he joins a new NBA team in his late playing days. He might look to Lebron James and Allyson Felix for clues. They share something in common that’s less about speed and more about ‘flowe.’ That seems to be the key to how they keep their game up and their gifting relevant.

Felix was recently seen in an add with Usain Bolt with a stack of medals around her neck. She has passed Bolt as the most decorated World Championship athlete with the most gold medals. Now she’s looking towards the 2020 Olympics to add more hardware and to possibly make history with team USA.

For James in his second season with the Lakers, he made history himself, becoming the first-ever player to score a triple-double with every NBA team over his career. The Lakers are off to a big start with the best record in the league. So how do they keep making it ‘do what in do’ in their careers? Well it’s with:

  1. Focus

Jams and Felix seem to do a good job managing their off-season focus and their in-season focus. When it’s off-season they’re busy building market cred and hometown impact with new projects. In-season they’re doing things that have fans thinking they haven’t lost a step from start to finish of the season.

  1. Leadership

James has played for three different teams in his career. Each time it seems he brings a new level of leadership to the mix. Felix has been running her tail off for as long as most can remember. She recently had an issue with a sponsor for lack of support during motherhood. She’s still showing poise and grace.

  1. Outlook

Making it ‘do what it do’ in career is sometimes a question of outlook. As with the aspect of their leadership, how they see things gives them a sense of self-accountability. They know having a good outlook means seeing the big picture before the big moment, seeing the forest from the trees.

  1. Work-Ethic

Maybe one of the hardest parts of having a good work ethic is being able to do the things you need to do when you need to do them, when no one’s really watching. That’s what the off-season is probably like for James and Felix, even though today’s social media world gives fans more ways to be watching.

There’re probably more medals and championship feats left in James and Felix. Who knows, they might be a good pairing for an ad campaign too. He’s trying to win one more NBA crown and she as Track & Field’s queen, is trying to win one more Olympic event. Maybe ‘sports gods’ are waiting to play their part.

Tip: It takes a fresh stream of ‘flowe’, that’s focus, leadership, outlook and work-ethic to keep your game up and your gifting relevant.

Talkback: Can you see James and Felix together in an ad campaign? For what product/service?

Oprah Winfrey Speaks Out and Usain Bolt Jumps In With Their New Year’s Resolutions to Make a Run

2018 Theme
The Year of ‘Got Shine?’:
Where The Things You Know and How You Flow Bring More Star Power for Sure

doc_lg

Looks like Red Carpet watchers and sports fans got a back-to-back treat in primetime. At the 75th Golden Globes, celebs came out in force to honor great movie productions. As if right on cue 24 hours later, the College Football Championship game between Georgia & Alabama had its share of great performances.

For the Globes, this year brought a new dose of social activism to the festivities. Oprah had her standout moment of course. While for football fans there was biting suspense as the game went down to the wire. And scrolling on the bottom of the TV screen during the game was news of Usain Bolt doing soccer.

The after-show buzz was if Oprah would run for President in 2020. Plus it seems Bolt wants to make a run at playing soccer on the big stage. It’s not clear if Oprah will seek higher office as a next chapter. But she’s down for the women’s cause. At least they’re open to taking their shine to a new level or new grind.

Oprah’s decision to speak out and Bolt’s decision to jump-in give clues for making the most of our new year’s resolutions. Whether it’s about a new level or new grind, their success shows us that to breakout from a slump, breakthrough from a setback or break barriers like the glass ceiling, it helps to:

  1. Know Your Game

Oprah spent 25 years on TV hosting her talk show. She then went from daytime queen to cable network mogul. Now she’s on Forbes’ Billionaires list. No one can question if she knows her game. A key to her brilliance from one game to the next is in how she builds-on her skill and grit during the learning curve.

  1. Know Your Groove

Knowing your professional game can sometimes feel boring, monotonous or be on auto-pilot. Oprah and Bolt saw how it can feel like not much of an effort or like you’ve lost your groove. Well, keeping your mojo or getting your groove back means keeping your results ‘on point’ around more passion and purpose.

  1. Know Your Grow

I can remember as a child on those days travelling with my dad to his farm. There were different types of crops which meant different techniques to help them grow. With different types of games professionally, it’s good to know what makes you grow to get your best stuff to flow at work, play or in the marketplace.

  1. Know Your Goal

Bolt wants to play in Europe for die-hard fans. Oprah wants to give young girls hope for tomorrow and the tools to achieve. A goal gives our dreams legs to stand on and a path to becoming the best we can be. And in the words of Oprah, “the biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”

usainbolt2

Oprah and Bolt have already reached great heights in their careers. They really don’t have to prove anything more to be secure. Their dreams have taken them east, west, north and south as if travelling the four corners of success. They give us a kind of GPS roadmap for making something of ourselves.

The new-year can be a good time to look at starting over. It seems Bolt’s doing that as an athlete. It’s also a good time for kicking things into higher gear. That’s what Oprah’s speech did for many who posted messages on social media. They’ve already shown us what it takes to ‘shine on’ and become legendary.

Tip: Taking your professional shine to a new level of brilliance or new grind means knowing how to work your game and hit your groove so that how you grow helps to push your goal.

Talkback: What’s it gonna take for Oprah make a run or for Bolt to become soccer’s new son?

A New Way to Shine with Highlights, Insights and Media-bites that’s Exciting (Old-School Flava)

Two weeks ago a Compton teen took off in a single engine plane to fly around the U.S. He’s back home now after doing just that. In two weeks the world’s attention will put the Rio Olympics on the radar. It’s clear that Isaiah Cooper & Usain Bolt can fly, when you check the record for how they blazed new trails.

Cooper and Bolt shared how they put their goals in flight. Bolt told Foot Locker’s Eastbay Magazine “I have to really push myself to make sure to stay in the shape I want to be in when the time comes.” These guys give us two stories on how the next level of many things starts with the three laws of project rising.

At 16, Cooper’s in the news as the youngest African-American to achieve this feat. But he remembers being on a path in life that wasn’t productive. The shift came about from visioning what could be. He avoided self-destruction by pushing the right buttons. That’s a good thing to learn as a budding pilot.

Who knows, they might have similar experiences when in flight. For Bolt it happens somewhere around 60 meters. Commentators like to say that his top-end speed got him cruising. Whether on the track, in the cockpit or at the office, they know this game time ‘cruising feeling’ means having passion at top-end.

Bolt has a big task ahead, hoping to make history by winning the sprint events at a third Olympics. Cooper also has sights set on new heights. In two years he hopes to be the youngest to fly around the world. As Bolt chills in the tropics he reminds us “If you put the work in, it will show at the end of the day.”

Two weeks not long ago you see. Compton teen took off to be. Flying around U.S. coast to coast. Now back home to a hero’s toast. In two week not that long or far. Rio Olympics to be on world’s radar. Isaiah Cooper in single engine plane sails. He and Bolt have blazed new trails. Check the record it’s off the rails.

Cooper and Bolt put goals in flight. Got people saying Alright Alright! Bolt knows he’s gotta keep pushing. To be in shape for world-class running. So that when the time to perform is here. He can turn on the jets and go there. Two stories on how next-level steps get rolling. Kinda starts with three laws of project rising.

A 16 year-old in the news is Cooper. Doing something that makes him super. Youngest African-American to achieve this feat. Come-on Mr. DJ, pump up the beat. Flashback to times of being un-productive. Now on a path of vision constructive. Pushing right buttons as a pilot avoids the destructive.

Bolt & Cooper share feelings of gold. With stories that get told and sold. For Bolt it’s around the 60-meter mark. For Cooper it’s by the cloud-line dark. Top-end speed got them cruising. To a place of the after-burning. Whether on track, in cockpit or office space. That ‘cruising feeling’ means passion’s in its place.

It’s a big task ahead for the sprinter. Hoping to make history in Brazil’s winter. By winning events three Olympics in a row. While Cooper sets sights on higher air flow. Fly around the world at age 18 or so. Will make him youngest ever amigo. As Bolt chills in the island sun. Putting in the work before end-of-day fun.

Tip: The key to blazing new trails is in turning on the jets so that after a while cruising time gets you there.

The countdown to the big game has begun. For Cam Newton it’s his first trip to the Superbowl. The other big game countdown is the 2016 Olympics. It’s six months away and Usain Bolt has his eyes set on the sprint double for a third time. These guys might be cut out of the same cloth of primetime performance.

Hall-of-Fame Quarterback Joe Namath is quoted by USA Today as saying “Cam is purely joyful to watch. He’s certainly entitled to showing his pleasure… if you’re not winning, you can’t do it.” Newton and Bolt show us how to bring juice on the job, mojo in the marketplace and super powers on the field of dreams.

Their gameplan doesn’t always go as expected. But they adjust their thrust because for them winning is a must. You know how water flows in a pipe when the pressure is released. They do the same as their juice on the job flows by releasing their passion. This works at the office and other parts of the business world.

Win or lose Newton’s likely to rake-in more commercials. Bolt’s not doing shabby either. He just landed a deal with an Australian company. The director said “It’s no secret that Usain Bolt competes to win. His hard work, fierce determination and unwavering commitment are exuded every time he hits the track.”

So what do these guys have in common? Well Cam celebrates with the dab. Usain poses as the ‘lightning bolt.’ They get the chance to showcase their strengths on the big stage. For Newton & Bolt, where there’s gold on the line they just turn super-power type performance into a celebration dance and hot pants.

Countdown to big game running. NFL pros back from Hawaii sunning. Cam Newton makes first Superbowl trip. Like dancing on Uptown Funk he’s ice cold hip. Six months to Olympics opening night. Usain Bolt looking to take flight. Guys cut out of same cloth. Primetime performance. not chicken broth.

Hall-of-Famer Namath knows about passing to catch. Saying Newton is joyful to watch. Entitled to showing his pleasure. ‘Cause he’s winning for good measure. Newton and Bolt bring juice on the job. Others want to say they’re snob. Mojo in the marketplace gleams. Super powers on the field of dreams.

Gameplan not always connected. Or going as they had expected. Finding ways to adjust. In focus, passing and thrust. Since winning for them is a must. You know how water flows in a pipe. When pressure released without the hype. Juice on the job flows the same. Work, play & passion in the game.

Win or lose Newton to rake-in more. Once game over and settle the score. Bolt’s on par to be market leader. Australian company his new commercial feeder. Director tells the story of competing to win. And seeing Bolt’s cheek-wide grin. Hard work, fierce determination and commitment with that stick a pin.

So what do they have alike? They could easily be like mike. Cam celebrates with a dab. Usain with ‘lightning bolt’ that’s fab. The chance to showcase their skills. On the big stage it’s the thrills. Where there’s gold on the line it’s a dance. Super-power type results in their performance and hot pants.

Tip: The best days on the job can seem like a song, dance and super-power type results in performance.
