Tamar Braxton & Geoffrey Owens Get Real About Passion, Pain & Fame as They Rebound in Their Showbiz Careers

doc_lg

Well the government shutdown is over and thankfully our public servants can return to work. This wasn’t the kind of workplace blip because of a change in career or starting a business. This was a standstill that was out of their control. It’s wild how some elected officials try to take credit for them going back to work.

Then there’s the Kanye West lawsuit recently claiming he was the reason for the successful rebooting of Jay-Z’s career. But a more exciting story is the Big Brother TV appearance by Tamar Braxton and SAG Awards appearance by Geoffrey Owens. They’re getting lots of love from fans for their comeback stories.

Braxton and Owens get real about passion, pain, fame as they rebound in their careers. For Braxton it’s about doing a brand reset from her time on the daytime TV show The Real. For Owens it’s more like a career reboot, after working at a food retail chain to make ends meet when his acting gigs dried up.

They’ve been through some moments that brought pain along the way. But even through those times they kept thinking about their passion for music and acting. They know how fame can have a way of ‘spitting you out’ from pop culture circles. But now they’re ready for their Act II as they refresh their showbiz feed.

Owens was part of a SAG Awards feature by sharing highlights from his career story. He ended his comments with the words ‘I am an Actor!” If Braxton had to do something similar, she’d probably end with the words “I am an Entertain-her.” Their advice on career reboot or brand reset might also include:

tamar-braxton3

  1. Create your lane

Braxton started out in the music business with her sisters before becoming a solo artist. She’s part of the Braxton Family Values reality show and even had a spinoff with her own show. Her success has meant being creative in a certain lane. And when there’s room to grow, going further by creating her own lane.

  1. Concentrate your skills

Owens spent time in the shadows of Hollywood when he had no roles. But as things went viral after being spotted working at a food store, he’s now in a different place. Acting gigs started opening up with a recurring role on a Tyler Perry produced show. So he’s able to concentrate his skills and pay the bills.

  1. Collaborate your efforts

Her music career is on the comeback with a new album release on the way. Part of what she might have learned from her time at The Real is how to collaborate her efforts. Even as a solo artist she still has to work with producers, promoters and influencers. That’ll help her project go from studio grade to platinum.

  1. Circulate your work

geoffrey-owens3

Owens might have agreed to do the Sag Awards feature to show appreciation for getting a second chance. But it might also be a good place to circulate his work. Meantime, Braxton’s appearance on Big Brother gives her the chance to do the same. She’s got fans voting for her in the publicist challenge.

Even in business the idea of a reboot, reset or refresh happens when companies says they’re ready for a do-over. Braxton and Owens are doing what it takes to keep the comeback wheels turning. They’ll have a new attitude and passion at work. They’ll be networking with peers and putting the career pieces together.

Tip: When you’re creative in your lane it opens the door for creating your own lane and taking things to the next level.

Chadwick Boseman and Beyoncé: Their Personal Expressions for How Hopes and Dreams Can Find the Path to Greatness

2018 Theme
The Year of ‘Got Shine?’
Where The Things You Know and How You Flow Bring More Star Power for Sure

doc_lg

The anticipation is building for the next release from MCU – Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s the latest Super Hero character known as the Black Panther. Lots of celebs got to see the first screening in person. The reviews have been filled with superlatives as if it’s a preview for going from block to blockbuster.

Then of-course there’s Beyoncé and her Grammy-chic appearance. She wasn’t up for any awards but as usual made an iconic fashion statement. Boseman plays the role of king in the upcoming movie. Beyoncé rocks the title of queen in pop culture. But it’s their personal expressions that deliver creative excellence.

The Black Panther storyline has themes that make each character’s greatness come alive. Whether it’s in action-moves of a super hero, amazing plays in the Superbowl or breakthroughs on the field of dreams, the path to greatness comes alive in two success modes, Lifestyle and Lifetrack. They make things pop.

Boseman and Beyoncé have used these on the path to greatness. For Boseman it’s taken a few roles that weren’t crossover but were a stepping stone. For Beyoncé, it’s in her creative relevance and how she goes from ‘nothing to something’ artistically. Their amazing work sends chills or makes you wanna chill.

beyonce-style

Who they are, what they do and how they flow are the sum total of how they express themselves. It’s the combination of their creative excellence and creative relevance that make them special. When things come together it’s like magic which might explain how their success keeps rising to the ceiling.

Over the years my dream has gone through a few climbs from sun-up to sun-down. Feedback from others has helped to tighten things up. The magic for writing this blog has gone from good to better. But the playbook that Boseman & Beyoncé have used on becoming their best seems to go something like this:

  1. Conceive and go from zero to breakout move.

Boseman and Beyoncé have different stories for how they’ve built their movie/music careers. One thing common to both is first seeing themselves doing what they’re doing now. They conceived it in their minds-eye and visualized it in their imaginations. Then after a while, things went from zero to breakout move.

  1. Believe and go from a ‘nobody’ to a rising ‘somebody.’

The space between what they visualized and what they delivered is in how they believed in themselves and in what’s possible. This helped Beyoncé go from singing in her living room to performing on the world stage. Not every dream goes that big. But dreams take you from a ‘nobody’ to a rising ‘somebody.’

  1. Achieve and go from bottom-stack to top-rack.

Every time you achieve something there’s usually a lesson and a lift. The lesson comes from looking at the ups and downs to get there. The lift comes from seeing where you are compared to where you once were. Maybe that’s why Boseman’s big screen roles and Beyoncé’s showbiz journey are so exciting.

  1. Receive and go from nomination to coronation.

Beyond the obvious star power, some think the movie should get nominations for the creative costumes, special effects or music soundtrack. Well just like in the movies, character development and creative genius have meant a lot to Boseman and Beyoncé. It’s taken them from nomination to coronation.

We celebrate them for making us want to sing, dance or feel like kings and queens. We emulate them in striving to better our game or biggup our name. Their hopes and dreams have found the path to greatness not by chance but by a playbook for creative brilliance that has helped make them famous.

Tip: Creative brilliance in your career grind and life dreams needs creative excellence to make you awesome and creative relevance to make you special.

A New Way to Shine with Highlights, Insights and Media-bites that’s Exciting (Old-School Flava)

Have things cooled down on social media yet? It seems folks were reacting not to Kanye’s latest philosophical waxing. Instead they were touting Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy performance and Cory Booker’s book release. Booker makes it plain and Lamar ‘keeps it 100’ for taking things to the next level.

Booker’s rise took him from city council, to mayor to NJs first African-American Senator.  He told Roll Call “As I found out in Newark, we made some of our best leaps when we found ways to make uncommon coalitions to get things done.” So what’s the deal on taking a leap of dreams by any means necessary?

With Lamar it’s all about finding the form that separates him from the norm. His lyrical mastery is unmatched. He brings a brash sense of consciousness without an overdose on bravado. Booker brings a cool and collected sense of un-pretentiousness. For them it’s about letting the work speak for itself.

The tweets after the Grammy’s for Lamar from fellow artists kept popping. Even Adele after a less-than-stellar sounding performance was all-in. Still, others try to analyze Booker’s career plan or Lamar’s social justice stand. But it’s as if their work feels right by them just like one’s dream feels like the right fix.

Booker’s ready to move the political scene from divide and conquer to multiply and prosper. It’s the fight we must have to push the American Dream and function as a ‘United Streets of America’ team. For these guys, ‘keeping it 100’ is more than dollar bills but about next level pillars because they keep it real.

Things cooled down on Twitter yet? Not ready to make a bet. Some folks think Kanye’s whack. Begging for money when he’s got no lack. People talking ‘bout Kendrick on the mic. And Cory Booker’s book tour hike. Booker makes it plain everyday on the Hill. He and Lamar ‘keep it 100’ for their next level chill.

Rising from city council chair. To serve as brick city mayor. Now he’s NJs first Black Senator. The ride on his career elevator. Learning a thing or two about best leaps. Coalitions getting things done in heaps. So in taking leaps of dreams what’s the real deal? It’s in the secrets that no one has to steal.

Lamar finding it in his hip-hop form. That separates him from the norm. Lyrical mastery unmatched in skill. Brash of consciousness, low-grade bravado and thrill. Booker more about cool and collectedness. In his sense of un-pretentiousness. Letting the work represent their game. Giving them more clout in their fame.

Tweets after the Grammy’s kept popping. From celebs and artists non-stopping. Even Adele was all-in. Even though her performance was off a thin. Some try and analyze Bookers game plan. While other figure-out Lamar’s justice stand. The work feels right by them. One’s dream the right fix and gem.

Booker to move politics from divide and conquer. With unity theme of multiply and prosper. A fight to push the American Dream. To function as ‘United Streets of America’ team. For these guys ‘keeping it 100’ more than dollar bills. But next level pillars and performance kills. Got to be real in the ‘hood or the hills.

Theme:–The Year of ‘Uppertunity’ – Get Lifted!”
With Higher Hopes, Bolder Dreams and Greater Teams (Old-School Flava)

The final season of American Idol hits TV screens in January. So Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban are on the road doing their star search. Thousands of wannabe’s have taken to the Idol stage. But it’s Jennifer Hudson who’s turned ‘singing in church’ into star-studded stage performances.

Hudson tells Glamour magazine “When I hear people say, ‘Jennifer Hudson, Oscar, Grammy winner,’ I’m like, Who are they talking about? That’s me? Certain things you can never really get used to.” She knows something about having the right mojo for handling setbacks in careers, brands and dreams.

Her journey on Idol did not end up how she might have originally hoped. She wasn’t among the finalists, having been booted from the show weeks earlier. Since then she’s had huge success in the big leagues. For her, it’s like being an undrafted athlete who goes on to earn MVP status in the championship game.

When she left Idol few (if any) saw her as a Grammy or Oscar winner. Her role in the movie Dreamgirls and her debut album sky-rocketed her acclaim. That’s the thing about being undrafted and having the right perspective. You feel a breakthrough coming even when others think it’s unexpected and uncharted.

Hudson endured the loss on the Idol stage. But it’s the loss of her mother, sister and nephew due to violence that was the hardest to bear. So she credits her son for not losing her sanity. Many see her as an undisputed rock in family and showbiz. Her success has included turning setbacks into comebacks.

Final season of American Idol coming soon. Hits TV screens before being sent to the moon. J-lo, Harry and Keith getting set. For fans place their winning bet. Thousands made the star search page. And JHUD made it to main stage. From singing in church back in the day. To star-studded performances that pay.

Tells Glamour Magazine it’s hard to think. All that’s happened in a wink. Oscar, Grammy winner what they call her. Some things she just can’t believe for sure. “Who they talking ’bout” she wonders. And other things she kinda ponders. The right mojo for handling dreams. From setbacks to award-winning teams.

Journey on Idol wasn’t to the top. But that wasn’t her last stop. Getting booted earlier on the show. A stepping-stone to helping her grow. Having success in movies and music scores. In the big leagues is where she soars. It’s like being undrafted in name. And becoming MVP in championship game.

After Idol few saw her next move. But she got on the Oscar and Grammy groove. Role in Dreamgirls and debut album fame. Helped sky-rocket her in acclaim. That’s having the right perspective even if undrafted. A breakthrough’s coming though unexpected and uncharted.

Hudson endured loss on Idol that year. But later loss of mother, sister and nephew was hard to bear. Credits her son in keeping her sanity. Not getting caught-up in thoughts of vanity. Many see her as undisputed rock through the setbacks. A star in her family and showbiz from related comebacks.

Who can get 2000 males-only in an arena to talk about “What Men Think?” That happened in Chicago recently during the season-opener taping for Steve Harvey’s daytime show. It seems there were jeers and sparks flying. Moreover, this is a case of Harvey having his hands in the branding cooking jar yet again.

When asked by the New York Post about blazing new trails Harvey said “The only thing I was really confident about was that I would have a different voice in daytime that wasn’t there before… and about the fact I know I’m funny, and funny works when all else fails.” Harvey markets his success flavors well.

He’s good at changing gears or moving careers by busting-out towards ‘got next.’ Harvey’s become an expert on relationship counsel and mentoring advice. Right before our eyes he’s gone from ‘King’ to common touch, from big personality to bigger person and from jokester to ‘master of the airwaves.’

Making it pop as one of the comedy ‘Kings’ was not the end of the road but the start of his next rise. It’s almost as if he’s turning the concept of the Good Humor ice-cream truck into a Hollywood Mogul enterprise. He sells many success flavors with more happy returns to come from his wildest dreams.

These days he’s being described as “the most powerful man in daytime.” He’s also got a new custom Bobblehead celebrity figure as a baseball park freebie. Harvey wouldn’t be shy about wearing a white suit like the Good Humor Man. He’s a shining star who’s a fun guy to his family and millions of female fans.

Ready to round-up 2000 guys? To talk “What Men Think” and whys? Happened in Chicago just this summer. Some say it was far from a bummer. Part of Steve Harvey’s daytime season opening. With a few jeers and sparks flying. A case of Harvey reaching with his hand. Into the branding cookie jar stand.

Asked by NY Post about his show. As he blazes new trails on the go. Says the only thing that’s sho nuff good. Is having a different voice than others would. Fact that he’s funny always works. Even those times when failure lurks. By pushing success flavas on the ready. Right for keeping his money steady.

Harvey’s good at busting-out. From the shadows to having ‘got next’ clout. Becoming expert on relationship counsel. Giving mentoring advice in life-skills morsel. Going from ‘King’ to common touch then chosen. From big personality to real bigger person. Mixing jokester with ‘soul teacher’ master lesson.

Making it pop in comedy was just the start. To fast-track rise and glimpse of his heart. Almost like the Good Humor truck ice-cream story. Turned into Hollywood media-mogul glory. Markets and sells many success flavas. With surprises for wildest dreams of the neighbors.

These days being called a power-broker. “The most powerful man in daytime” mover-shaker. With custom Bobblehead souvenir newbie. As a baseball park fan-club freebie. Harvey’s not shy about wearing a white suit. Like the Good Humor Man he’s serving millions of fans in his pursuit.

It’s no longer a matter of debate that Netflix is here to stay. The online movie outlet keeps raising the stakes in entertainment. Consumers are more open to new choices and stars to new paychecks. That might also be true for Tom Cruise. His ‘Mission Impossible’ rollout is a masterpiece work of art.

A movie review in The Atlantic says about Cruises’ stunts, “It may no longer constitute ‘acting,’ but the star’s physically demanding performance powers the latest installment of the spy franchise.” That’s like saying Cruise doesn’t leave home for work without his market edge seen as ‘genius in action.’

For almost 20 years this movie franchise has been breaking box office records. It’s a spinoff from the TV series back in the day. The current ‘Rogue Nation’ edition is described as “Better than Bourne, Better than Bond.” That’s how everyday genius at work gets described as “better than good, better than most.”

That’s special when co-workers see you the way Cruise’s co-stars see him. The movies are fun and exciting for viewing. They’re built around a producer’s vision, actor’s passion and plot-twist in mission to move our emotions. When that combo and Cruise’s genius go to work it raises the bar for everyone.

Cruise does his movies proud in the ‘before and after’ extras. That might mean getting fit for the part or leaving a piece of his heart with fans. He brings his brand of ‘crazy’ to the big screen in creating memorable scenes. So he keeps his market edge fresh and for the workplace that’s as good as it gets.

No longer matter of debate. Netflix here to stay love it or hate. A movie outlet in online media. Raising its stake on Wikipedia. Where consumers embrace new choices. Stars new paychecks and fan voices. True for Tom Cruise and others in showbiz. His ‘Mission Impossible’ rollout a masterpiece wiz.

Movie review raves about his on-screen skills. Stunts so daring it’s like taking pills. Physically demanding performance from end to end. A flick that brings suspense around the bend. Cruise doesn’t leave home for work without packing. His market edge ‘genius in action’ not lacking.

Almost 20 years franchise pulls big box office dollars. It’s been watched by homies and hometown scholars. A spinoff from TV series back in the day. “Better than Bourne, Better than Bond” is what they say. How everyday genius gets described for folks. Whether in being a nerd or from telling jokes.

Special when co-workers see you rock swagger. Cruise’s co-stars treat him like a hot stepper. Fun movies for action-filled viewing. Seen in a producer’s inner vision flowing. Add-in actor’s passion and plot-twist mission. To the clips that moves our emotion. A combo for raising the bar in market promotion.

Makes movies proud through early phases. As seen in the ‘before and after’ stages. Might mean getting fit for a new part. Or leaving fans a piece of his heart. Bringing his brand of ‘crazy’ to big screen. Thrilling the crowd with memorable scenes. Market edge being on the ready. In workplace that’s good and steady.

The jury’s out on Jamie Foxx hosting the iHeart Music Awards. He’s taken some heat for his monologue jokes. The show saw Rihanna channeling Lil Kim. There were others who made headlines. But Ryan Seacrest has made a name for himself not just in showbiz but by putting heart into his work ethic.

Why wouldn’t people put this into their work or businesses into their brands? Southwest Airlines knows the importance of heart. They’ve added it to their logo and commercial appeal as the ‘dot’ in dotcom. Even iHeartRadio seems to have caught-on that the parent company changed names to iHeart Media.

Business leaders know it takes heart to captivate and soul to motivate. Maybe Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake can relate. She received a few honors while he was named Music Innovator. Their body of work speaks for itself. Some might say she streams heart into her songs while he pours soul into his.

In words you’ve heard before, they know ‘all about that base makes top dollar.’ They connect their fan-base with music, fun and lots more. Who knew that Swift had such admiration for Timberlake? She could possibly be the next recipient of the Innovator Award (Well, Kanye West might have something to say).

As one of the few from the original crew, Seacrest keeps things ‘light and loose’ on American Idol. Swift keeps turning out #1 albums and Timberlake keeps delivering his music as ‘white soul.’ They all bring heart to the stage the way an athlete combines passion and grace within their greatness.

Jury’s out on iHeart Awards host Jamie Foxx. Many not sure he knocked it out the box. Taken some heat for his monologue jokes. Didn’t go over well with some folks. Rihanna showed-up like Lil Kim of old. Others made headlines not as bold. Seacrest in the building with his heart. Work ethic sets him far apart.

Why wouldn’t people put heart in their brands? Opens the door to more buying hands. Southwest Airlines adds heart to its sleeves. As seen on its logo and pamphlet leaves. Commercial appeal to hit the spot. As seen in its URL dot. Even iHeartRadio on the same page. Changing its name on the main stage.

Biz leaders know heart helps to captivate. Then add some soul to motivate. Maybe Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake can relate. As they cash-in the money plate. She gets a few honors as songwriter. He gets the press as Music Innovator. She streams heart from track to track. He pours soul like Aloe Blacc.

In words you’ve heard before. ‘All about that base makes top dollar’ the score. So they connect with their fan-base for sure. With music, fun and a whole lot more. Who knew Swift had such admiration. For Timberlake’s personification? Could be next Innovator star. Kanye West not ready to say she’s on par.

One of the few Idol originals. Keeps things light, loose, with the lyricals. Swift keeps turning out #1 songs. Timberlake fans think he does no wrongs. Music that’s kinda like ‘white soul.’ And comedy skits from his SNL role. Bringing lots of heart to the mix. An athlete’s passion and grace on the greatness fix.

Kanye West is fuming because Beyoncé didn’t get album of the year. He’s not the only one upset about something. Twitter CEO Richard Costolo was quoted saying “We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years.” He wants less crap and more cream to rise to the top.

They’ve been losing users due to social-media abuse. Costolo knows this is gonna be tricky and is ready to tackle the issue. Maybe success at this will be similar to how achievers cause less crap and more cream to rise to the top. Somewhere along the lines Costolo might go back to the Twitter roots.

The reason for Twitter is different from Facebook or Linkedin. Similarly, the purpose behind someone’s dream is different from another. Costolo will likely look at what gives Twitter its ratings and whether some factor(s) are underrated. Cream rises to the top by separating the over-inflated from the under-rated.

It’s been said ‘you get what you pay for.’ Another way of seeing this is ‘you get what you reward.’ So how might Twitter better reward cream in rising to the top? Maybe that’s the missing element in having Twitter clout or street cred. Building connections takes a few clicks but building clout takes much greater skill.

Some high-profile users have mixed feelings about social-media. Those who’ve been bullied or hacked are fuming as well. Costolo knows that if this isn’t fixed soon Twitter could be losing-out even more. So for Twitter and those who want to raise their profile, turn the cream of your dreams into better ratings.

costolo

Kanye West is again fuming. Thinks Beyoncé had no business losing. Didn’t get props for album of the year. Maybe her ‘Beyhive’ fans have no fear. West not the only one with a gripe. Twitter CEO feels he’s got to refresh the buzz and hype. He wants less crap getting the pop. And more cream rising to the top.

Users are dropping left and right. Social-media abuse and online flight. Fixing the mess gonna be tricky. Tackling the issues gonna be sticky. Success for Twitter not unlike that of achievers. Less crap and more cream add-up to believers. Maybe Twitter roots will come into play. If they’re gonna make any headway.

Twitter different from Linkedin or Facebook. Whether viewed from a smartphone or tablet nook. Purpose and dreams different from another. Even if you start out undercover. Time to look at Twitter rating scale. Before putting stuff up for sale. Separating factors that are overinflated. From those that are under-rated.

‘You get what you pay for’ some have said. ‘You get what you reward’ sticks in others’ head. How does Twitter get less crap and more cream to rise? Takes figuring out some reward as the prize. Maybe a missing element in Twitter clout or cred. Connections take a few clicks but clout’s better instead.

Some high-profile users have jumped ship. With mixed feelings about being social-media hip. Those bullied or even hacked. Are fuming or already been packed. Without fixing, Twitter could lose-out more. To others having better score. Raising your profile or dream rating. Is about letter cream do the elevating.
