daddy-daughter09 Know the 4 ways, 13 steps to a new career or business? It’s like one, two, three, money, money, money. Here’s a good place to start. Find your main thing. Choose your professional sides. Serve your purpose. You gotta know how to live it up. You gotta know how to tell your story.

 

Here’s what happened the last time you went to a restaurant. You were seated in your preferred section. You were given a menu. From there you ordered an appetizer, entrée and maybe dessert. Think back to the entrée. It came with a main thing. Maybe chicken or beef or fish.

 

That main thing came with some sides. Maybe rice or fries. Greens or some veggies. Well that’s a good way to look at where to start. Raise your game. Reinvent your career. Start a new business. First find your main skill, strength or marketable gig. Then surround that main thing with professional sides. This means looking around for multiple streams of income.

 

Now, suppose your food was not served on a plate? You’d be mad as shad, right? That’s where serving with your purpose comes into play. Your life’s purpose is like the plate. Talent makes you good at what you do. Purpose makes you good at serving-up what you do. Together, you’re just good at making it ‘do what it do.’

 

Let’s put your main thing, professional sides and purpose to work. Start by writing a letter to life. Begin this way. “Dear life, this is to inform you of my intentions for career, business, relationships and life itself.” Go ahead, finish the letter and tell life what you want. If you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired then buckle up. Work it out. When you’re done you would have just written what the experts call a mission statement.

daddy-daughter09 What makes a relationship click? I’m thinking it’s peace, love and soul. Maybe it’s sex, laughs and rock & roll. With all the buzz about domestic abuse beat downs and break-ups even Oprah decided to sound off. So, what made Oprah have to speak her mind? Well, there’s more.

 

Relationships can be social, nuptial or professional. Take marriage for example. You are one. You see the other person as your equal, not your sequel. Opposites do attract. It’s where sweet and sour can go together. You’re keeping it real. People hang around those who make them feel good about simple stuff.

 

You know you have a good thing if there’s a love connection. You begin to see the other person as a potential soul-mate. The key is whether there is less drama and more peace. Maybe that’s what Oprah was trying to say to the lovebirds. There is far too much drama for such a rush in getting back together.

 

In business some of the same points apply. You gotta have trust. A good business relationship is built on feeling secure, one with the other. You get no respect? Well, respect is earned not bought or scammed. A good student might become a Rhodes Scholar. A good soldier might receive military honors. A good business partnership builds equity and loyalty.

 

So, you’re trying to nail-down a relationship. It could be going from boo to wifey. Going from networking friend to business partner. A marriage that works has peace, love and soul-mate. A relationship that works builds trust, respect and equity. That’s saying the same thing. They are the glue that keeps the partnership alive and makes the relationship stick.

daddy-daughter09 “You jigglin’ in them jeans.” Ever said that to someone? Were you trying to hit on them? Not really! Just paying a complement, right? Maybe you heard those words before and knew they were talking about you. You wore your favorite jeans and somebody took notice. It made you feel good. Well your business brand or persona should create the same feeling.

 

Here’s a thought. People don’t buy your product or service. They buy you. They also buy more on emotion than on logic. Think about it. You’re buying the feeling you get from wearing those jeans. So marketing and selling involves having a brand. It involves connecting the brand with an emotional payback. Isn’t that how the Trump Brand works?

 

Watch Donald Trump in action. He has a certain style and flare. You might not like how he wears his hair. But the Donald gets it. Branding is style. Style is important but not enough. You’ve got to have some substance. Style without substance is just a fad. It soon fades away. Substance is the content of who you are and what you bring. It’s the brick and mortar, the body and brains. Effective branding brings style and substance to the mix.

 

Branding is really the subtext of your business or persona. Nobody really cares about your business. They just care about how your business satisfies their needs. Sometimes that’s with a product. Sometimes that’s with a service. Branding is to your business what style is to your persona. It’s the subtext of who you are and what you do in the marketplace. 

The Trump Brand is Real Estate. It is Casinos and Golf Course Design. There’s probably more. The Trump Brand sparks feelings of authority, money and celebrity. He has a helicopter to go along with the Penthouse in Trump Tower. That’s how the Trump Brand works. These come through real clear on his Reality TV Show. It might even explain why the Donald is such a marketable Brand.

Do You See Color?

daddy-daughter09 Heard the buzz about ISEECOLOR? It’s a new Social Networking site started by a nationally syndicated radio personality. It seems to combine social and content. Fast becoming a hit, it raises the question “do you see color?”  Choose Yes, No, or let me explain.

 

If yes then maybe you’re able to see people for who they are. You see them without having to second-guess them. If no, then maybe you’re fooling yourself. You should be able to see color without having to judge color. That’s basically what Dr. King said in his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.

 

Don’t take my word for it. Let’s go to the video tape transcript. King started out by recounting the days of slavery, segregation and discrimination. He chastised the Government about the lack of equality for the Negro. He spoke about poverty in a land of prosperity. He said America had issued the Negro a Bad Check which came back marked insufficient funds.

 

The ‘60s freedom campaign was about opening the doors of opportunity. It was about leveling the playing fields. King warned that there was a fierce urgency of now. This often used slogan by President Obama meant that the waiting game was over. So, WWKD? What would King do or say in response to the question “do you see color?”

 

The answer is right there in the speech. King said “militancy must not lead us to distrust all white people. Many of our white brothers and sisters realize that their destiny is tied up with ours.” Whether you’re Black or White, our collective destinies are tied together. When you see color you won’t devalue or overvalue others. You can see color without having to judge by color. So what does it really mean if you don’t see color? Let me explain.

 

You saw the recent Newspaper cartoon. You heard the speech by Attorney General Eric Holder. Race in America is not going away. In Jamaica where I grew up we learned to focus on ethnicity (what makes us same). This helped us appreciate race (what makes us different). That’s a lesson we can all use to see color without having to fear race. Remember, success runs in every race.

Working on a Dream.

daddy-daughter09 Coldplay and Jay-Z performed at the Grammys. Together! Who would have put these two on the same stage? Let’s not kid ourselves. It wasn’t really a match made in heaven. They did their thing and a few people cheered. Not sure we’ll ever see this on Youtube. But there’s something here we can work with.

 

How about Lil Wayne and Bruce Springsteen together? Can you dig that? One guy represents the ghetto while the other the Hills. Ok, it may be a stretch but they have a common story to tell. Both are recording artists, yes. Both are working on a dream, for sure. Lil Wayne’s coming from the ‘hood in New Orleans. He’s probably seen a thing or two. Springsteen Reinventing himself over the years. This says a lot of his longevity in the business.

 

In Lil Wayne’s pre-Grammy interview he described himself as Gangsta. I see where he’s coming from. But his work ethic helps explain his success. Working on a dream is not for the feint hearted. Even those as young as Lil Wayne or as old as Springsteen have a shot. It takes some attitude, fortitude and a proven formula.

  1. See it. 
  2. Build it.
  3. Sell it.
  4. Drink on it.

The life journey of Dr. Ben Carson was recently told in a made-for-TV movie. As a young man he remembered a story shared by his Pastor. It was about a Missionary Doctor who worked with the less fortunate. This stuck with Carson. He was not trying to grow up to be a Lil Wayne. Instead he wanted to become a Brain Surgeon. He saw himself through that story. Working on a dream involves visioning yourself. Vision helps to create your reality. Reality helps to mold your vision. Gradually your vision and reality merge into dream come true.

 

Some say Lil Wayne is more than a Gangsta. He’s a musical genius. He travels between events on two custom buses. One is his home on wheels. The other is his mobile studio. At any moment he can turn an idea into a hot track. He can build some new beats. It helps to have a scratch pad or a test track when working on your dream. You save yourself some public mistakes. You prove to yourself that the dream is doable. This way you can begin to build it as you see it.

 

 The first and toughest sell is to yourself. Self-talk can be a positive or a stumbling block. The best self-talk is the one that helps you sell your ideas. After you sell yourself (to yourself) you have to sell it to your target market. It’s harder to sell someone something if you don’t believe in yourself. So, I have a secret to tell. This blog is one way for you to eavesdrop on my sell.

 

 Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was recently embarrassed by pictures of him smoking weed. No charges are being filed but he’s learned a lesson. It’s OK to celebrate your victories. There’s nothing wrong with having a drink on living your dreams. Just know that not everybody around you is for you. When you win have a party. Invite some friends (including me). Working on your dreams should include a time for work, for play and for hip hip hooray.

 

Living your dreams is a great way to pump new life into your workday. That’s because creativity shows you’ve got skillz. The results you produce show your creativity. This works no matter where you are on your dream journey. It’s like going through the seasons. Each year there’s Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. So it is with living your dreams. You see it, build it, sell it and drink on it. Then you start the cycle all over again. Hopefully each new season brings more success.

The Love Of Your Life.

Happy Valentines Dad!

There’s a movie in the works and here’s a sneak peak. The title has not yet been decided. It will be called either Perfect Match or Perfect Affair. It’s a love story centered on the question “is the love of your life also the lust of your life?” This question seems tricky but it’s for real. So let’s talk about it. The movie might not fully answer the question. But it’s sure to stir up some passion.

It will be headlined by four internationally known actors. Their initials are H.C., W.C., M.B. and H.H.O. Without giving away much more let’s just say they are veterans in the business. The characters they play are not unlike typical male-female relationships. There’s love, lust and a little Levitra for those suffering from equipment dysfunction. Some need a front-end lifter.

 These actors were chosen because of their past roles in the Soaps. Take for example H.H.O. who’s sometimes called Mr. Flow. His role shows that communication is key in any relationship. This character was once a playa and abuser but now teaches the ropes of relationships. He now realizes that “to argue is to compete while to communicate is to understand.” He shows how communication is important for a healthy relationship with your mate.

 

Then there’s M.B. who plays the role of a Corporate Executive making big money. His job includes extensive travel. His clients are some of the who’s who in sports and entertainment. His friends are among the best and the brightest. His wife is a stay-at-home Mom taking care of three young children. The turning point in his relationship was when he became very ill. His wife took on the role of night nurse. Being helpless forced him to begin seeing her as his equal and not his gofer.

 

His wife whose initials are W.C. (she kept her maiden name) is a strong woman. Because she is a homemaker doesn’t mean she is a slouch. Here’s a woman who did everything around the house and home. She sometimes found this to be a thankless role. Even so, she did a marvelous job of managing the household while her man was down and out. Her role is getting couples to share the load and thereby deepen the love. She believes there’s a difference between running the household and keeping the household running.

 

Not to be taken lightly is the role of sex in the movie. That’s where H.C. (aka Sweetie) comes in.  What’s a love story without a good love scene? Some women like to use sex as an emotional weapon. They hoard up the lovin’ to get their man to act right. Some men like to use it as an ego-driven scorecard. Basically thinking the more the merrier. The point that H.C. tries to make in the movie is that sex is more than just an event-filler. It should be seen as a fulfiller.

This movie could be headlined by anyone who’s seen the ups and downs of a relationship. We picked these characters because of their experience and commitment. If your relationship is the perfect match then it probably was love at first sight. If it was lust at first sight then maybe it’s the perfect affair. No matter where you start out, it can still have a good, long ending. Just be sure to invite Hot Chocolate (Sweetie), Whip Cream, Marshmallow Balls and Some H(2)O to the party. Happy Valentines!

Their Last Dollar Turned Into Millions!

daddy-daughter2 “Bailout, Babies, Blagojevich and Bullsh%!.” That’s the headline from last week’s series of events. First it was the Stimulus Plan being passed with no Republican support. What’s up with that? Then we heard about the Octuplet births where we later found out that the mother already had six kids. What’s your feeling? Then it was the former Illinois Governor being impeached by the State Senate after a weeklong media blitz. Is a movie in the works?

 

As if that weren’t enough to chew on, then it was reported that bonuses were paid out to executives of companies that received government bailout money. Some have come to the defense of these decisions by saying that it was good for the economy. Let me ask this question, if these companies did not receive the bailout they would have failed, right? And if they had failed there would be no money to pay bonuses, right? So, what’s wrong with this picture?

 

Well, let’s get back on message so that I’m not accused of wearing my feelings on my sleeves. It’s interesting how RPs (that’s the rich & privileged) found ways to use the taxpayer bailout to turn their last dollar into million dollar bonuses. The everyday person has to hope and pray to make ends meet. And if the average Joe were to go from broke to billions they would have to do it the old-fashioned way. Successful rags to riches or zero to hero stories seem to have a common theme and similar tale.

 

Before we learn more about how someone like Tyler Perry turned his last dollar into millions, let’s look at a company like Fedex for clues on building your business or career into big dollars. When you examine how Fedex does business you’ll find the following key components:

 

1.     Express

2.     Ground

3.     Freight

4.     Office

 

The Express services represent the bread and butter of their business. It’s where they move packages overnight and in the process move the marketplace. It represents the way they maximize the assets of their business. You also have assets that you bring to your business or the marketplace as well. The way you sharpen your skills or improve your game will determine how you maximize your assets. It’s not something that happens instantly and that’s why turning your last dollar into millions is not an overnight success.

 

The Ground services represent the delivery of packages the bare-bones way. This means transporting by rail for some but in the case of Fedex by road. When all else fails, this part of the business can keep them going if all the planes stopped flying. What do you do or who do you have in your life that helps you stay grounded? Is it a friend, family, a past experience, or your values? One way you know you’re working in the right field or building the right business is when your work supports your values and your values drive your work.

 

Then there is the Freight division of their business. Not much is said about how much freight is handled by Fedex but trust me it’s quite a load. This area is like the heart and soul of their business. It’s probably where everything got started before the company blew up. How do you put your heart and soul into what you do? Sometimes there’s a need for compassion and sometimes there’s a need for full blown passion. It takes passion to keep building your business or growing in your career if you hope to see the day when millions of people hear about your work.

 

What was once Kinkos has now been folded into Fedex Office. This area covers printing to copying, and publishing to promotion. It’s about helping to add the efficiency or effectiveness element to the way business gets done. Efficiency involves doing things better while effectiveness involves doing new and better things. Can you find ways in your job/business tasks to improve your rating, increase your cash flow and add a new level of efficiency or effectiveness to the bottom line?

 

Producer/Actor Tyler Perry is best known on the Theater Circuit for playing the Madea Character. His journey to riches is one that we all can learn from and emulate. Here’s a guy who was once homeless and down to his last few bucks. Perry arrived at a turning point where he looked in himself, looked up to God and then started working on his dream. While it hasn’t happened overnight we have seen it happen right before our very eyes as he has gone from plays to film to TV sitcoms. Like Fedex, Perry knows that it takes heart, passion, skill and pizzazz to turn your last dollar into millions.

Upgrade U or You’re Fired!

daddy-daughter2 Well, what a week it’s been since Barack Obama took office as the nation’s 44th President. This was such an historic event it leaves us all with so many show and tell moments. Some people are still speechless while others simply want to pinch themselves. The current mood in the country is like the best of times and worst of times, all at the same time.

 

The first order of business has been to focus on the economic crisis. There are reports in the news that a Bailout is coming. As the Congressional Leaders iron out the details we might also want to perform a self-check in the meantime. With increasing layoffs being announced each day it’s clear that we’re in for a rough ride. Now that Obama is President it’s time to upgrade U ‘cause a change is gonna come for you, for true.

 

The question is what kind of change? The current economic climate leads us to think that it’s time to upgrade U because you got next:

 

  1. To be Hired
  2. To be Fired
  3. To be Sick & Tired

As the marketplace continues to bleed pink slips it will eventually arrive at a point where things have to clot. Between now and then, this period offers up the opportunity to find a new job, or a better job or to move closer to your dream job. It offers up the opportunity to go from pain to promotion or from guts to glory. It allows us to grow personally and professionally. If you were given the choice of having a half-baked potato or a twice-baked potato (with all the fixins) which would you pick? Chances are the twice-baked, right? Well if you want to experience life as twice-baked (with all the bling bling) then consider the following key areas.

At birth we arrive on earth as a brand new human being. Each individual or person learns to talk, walk, and grows from infant to teenager to adult. Over time the change in physical features are self-evident. However, the changes in personal strengths are made possible through self-help. You learn to tie your shoelace, brush your teeth and comb your hair at an early age. You also learn to read, write and apply yourself to be functional. There are some things you never need to learn again but there are others you need to expand on or re-learn in order to upgrade U. So, what are you doing to grow as a person?

Some of our most exciting times in life begin when we’re teenagers. You learn to drive. You go on your first date. As time passes you experience some other firsts that you never forget. Then you might settle down with the person you consider as the love of your life. Relationships can go sour for reasons tied to money, infidelity or insufficiency. But oftentimes an underlying reason for the break-up is when one spouse outgrows the other. While we all arrive at a point in life where we’re no longer growing physically, there is still a need for us to grow emotionally as well as spiritually if we want to maintain our sanity. So, what are you doing to grow as a friend or partner?

Eight is Enough was the title of a ’70s TV sitcom and might also be the words used by the new parents from California of eight kids. They will certainly need help with raising their clan of six boys and two girls. They will have a lot of stories to tell as parents about the uniqueness of each child. This litter-like birth will attract worldwide media coverage and might even make it into the Record Books. Becoming a parent is one of the most precious experiences life has to offer. However, your most precious testimonial is not what you say about you or what your peers say about you. It’s what a child says about you because they can see right through you. So, what are you doing to grow as a parent?

No matter how young or old you are you can learn something new every day. Here’s something that might surprise you. Did you know that the whistles used by NBA Referees have a wireless connection to the game clock? When the Referee blows the whistle it’s supposed to automatically stop the clock. Gone are the days when a whistle was just a whistle and gone are the days when your day job is just where you go to work. Nowadays people are looking for ways to apply technology and to have their passion go to work as well. So, what are you doing to grow as a professional or to move closer to landing your dream job? 

At the end of the day if your boss, your spouse (the real boss) or your child were to say to you, “Upgrade U or your fired,” what would it mean? It would be a major call to action. Well don’t want for those words. Yes you can change your situation, your thinking or direction in real time. As you do you’ll see your results take-off over time which will trigger a sense of possibilities for a lifetime.

America, We Can Be One.

daddy-daughter2 “It’s pretty amazing to watch Democracy and Capitalism at its best and sometimes at its worst.” That was the point made by a TV Commentator as he was asked about the different ways that people are cashing in on Obama’s election victory. There have been ads in the media for everything from magazine cover pages, to decorative plates to even basketball sneakers. The Commentator goes on to say, “it’s a good thing that Obama makes his own income as President and as an Author.”

 

With the inauguration of President Obama now behind us let’s recap what we just witnessed. Four years ago the country was introduced to a young man with a funny name at the Democratic National Convention. At that time he was the junior Senator from Illinois who spoke with clarity of conviction. Two years ago he announced his candidacy for President and took to the highways and skyways with a slogan of “Yes We Can!” His early Election Primary/Caucus wins in States that are not urban or considered democratic strongholds proved to be a turning point.

 

This got the attention of the pundits and critics. It might have even caused Black America to take a second look. As Election Day approached it became more apparent that Obama was poised to make history. The results came in that night and Obama was declared the President-elect at 11PM Eastern Time. Cheers began to rise from those who worked hard to make this victory possible. Tears began to flow from those who could look back on the pain and sacrifices of the past. The promise of Dr. King’s dream had finally come!

 

During the campaign Obama touched on some hot-button social issues like Fatherhood. This made some in Black America mad. The overall campaign was built on a promise to make change. Most Politicians choose change as a theme to run on. It’s a logical fit because it conveys the message of out with the old ideas and in with the new. Out with the Old Boy’s Network and in with some new blood. However, he was able to capitalize on this change message in a new and exciting way.

 

First he made it known that the change was going to occur from the ground up and not the top down. Why was that significant you ask? Because he was able to change the way people see change. Our human nature is to resist change. People think change is good as long as they’re not the ones having to change. It’s been said that you can’t change people. You can only change yourself and watch people or the situation change around you.

 

If there were a Men’s relay team of public officials who made this victory possible it would be Dr. King, to Rev. Jesse Jackson to Colin Powell to Barack Obama. So we witnessed Obama make history in becoming the first African-American President of the United States. You go Bro!  We have seen signs of him beginning to make change from his time campaigning through his transitioning role into the Presidency. Now we have to support our President as he works towards making good on his campaign pledges and on the long-standing promise of America. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Your Dream, My Dream, Dr. King’s Dream.

daddy-daughter2 What do Dr. King’s dream and American Idol have in common? You will arrive at the answer in a minute. Over 40 years ago Dr. King echoed the words “I have a Dream!” He went on to say that it’s a dream deeply rooted in the American Dream. That sounds all nice and uplifting but what did Dr. King mean then and how do those words play out today?

 

Most people can relate to the ideals of the American Dream. For some people, it’s about going from nothing to something, from rags to riches. It’s the idea of making a living and living your making, by doing whatever you like. Dr. King’s powerful words remind us that America is the land of opportunity. The power of his words was rooted in your dream and in my dream.

 

So how do you know what is your dream? How do you build a business around your dream and build that dream around your business? How do you connect the dots of your dream? Well, here are a few suggestions for marking the dot and hitting the spot in living you dreams.

 

1.     Your Work-life

 

2.     Your Friends & Family

 

3.     Your Self

 

4.     Your God

 

Caution: this is not my attempt to brag but instead to testify as a ‘living your dreams’ witness. Back in the mid 90s I received feedback on my job that proved life-changing. It wasn’t really new information as much as it was new attention. This aha moment was a turning point because it put a spotlight on my hidden passion and untapped potential. If there is a job or personal experience from your past that keeps coming back at you then maybe that’s your dream waiting to blast off.

 

The feedback caused me to poll my friends and peers. I wanted to know how they would describe me. Their comments hinted that I was already doing for free what I now do and get paid. Whether it’s working with your hands, your mind or your heart, what your friends tell you can be further fuel for taking the dream journey. Listen to those who know you well or work closely with you. But be careful of the dream-busters and dream stealers.

 

As I began a career makeover I was inspired to answer this question, “Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?” Back in the late ‘60s the Executives at Sony sat around a table and asked the same question about their product line. After long discussions they arrived at the invention of the Sony Walkman. They concluded that this device would be a hot item for the increasingly mobile consumer. The Walkman has since made its mark, made the company millions and died. If that question was good enough for Sony then it was good enough for me. It has helped to focus my business in the areas of speaking and training, publishing and broadcast radio. These are the areas I hope to make my mark while I yet have life.

 

I must confess that I also went to a Higher Power which played out something like this, “Hey Big G, what’s the reason you made me?” The response was sort of like this, “Son, I made you and your fellow humans a little lower than Angel status. I also gave everyone three human attributes that make you uniquely unstoppable. Your Calling is how you make Big G look good. Your Purpose is how you serve some earthly good. After trying out my ideas and jump-starting my dream I was ready to leave my full-time job as a Computer Engineer to pursue my dream full-time. This wasn’t easy as in one sense I was going from hero to zero. How did I know it was time?  Some kind of confirmation or validation helps. Have you ever been to an event where parking is free once you get the ticket stamped at the front desk or by someone in authority? Well, once Big G provides the revelation the rest is up to you. Along the way you will receive feedback from your life’s journey to be used for connecting the dots. The validation you receive from Big G, the marketplace, peers, friends and family provides a free pass for letting your dreams live.

You may have noticed that Oprah has recently become more public about her struggles with weight. Many of us on the dream journey have to work tirelessly through various struggles as well, including rejection burnout. Any successful dreamer will tell you about the series of No’s they had to overcome on the way to the defining YES! One take-away from Oprah is, “perfect we’re not and perfect we will never be. We’re all just on the road to perfection that is not available in this life.”
