The Oscar noms are in and what a difference a year makes! It seems the controversy of #OscarsSoWhite a year ago has been heard. Now it’s about #OscarsSoColorful! There’re more diverse nominations telling a broader story. Maybe that’s why Issa Rae & Sanaa Lathan are shining their career glory in a new light.

Here’s what Rae’s book publisher said about free e-books on the weekend of the women’s march: “All are stories of strong women overcoming adversity, taking second chances, and figuring out their place in the world.” A case of first impressions being good, second chances making us better for reaching our best.

Rae started by imagining her place in the social maze as an ‘awkward black girl.’ This was a first step to building on her dream for telling stories. Now she’s the brains and beauty behind the cable show Insecure set for a second season. With other projects about to pop, she’s carefully worked on finding her lane.

Lathan known from the movie Love & Basketball is set to star in a new TV series. With real life cultural themes in the forefront, she’s made a name for herself as a kinda modest maven of Black Hollywood. Maybe she’d say it takes an ‘electric lady’ to create your happiness even when ‘life’s a bitch’ or a test.

You get a sense for her work as Rae stands in the doorway of her office with a picture of Boyz in the Hood on one side and Love & Basketball on the other. For her it’s not just about bang bang or romance & finance. It’s about bridging the gap and living the life between what’s not and what’s hot. Well alright!

A well-known Brit comes to America. A classy American goes to Britain. That describes Amal Clooney and Angelina Jolie’s latest moves. Clooney is serving as a visiting professor at Columbia University, Jolie heads to the London School of Economics. They bring style and smarts to the “Beauty & Brains” factory.

Recently Jolie had to take a pause for health reasons. She did beat it and is back stronger. Her career has also seen times when things happened in fast-forward. The newest player in late night TV has entered the building! That’s how some saw the debut of CBS’ Late Night with Stephen Colbert. He joins the ranks of comedy hosts who mix politics and showbiz eclectics. Competition for late night eyeballs is on, as Colbert’s hunch is that pop culture can be the star teacher.

He tells USA Today about his new role saying “It gives me everything I want. I like meeting the guests, I like the grind, I like a live audience, I love to hear the laughter. It’s the only job I could imagine that was a promotion.” This is a case of landing a promotion by learning the ropes and not being stuck on stupid.

Colbert made a grand entry with Joe Biden, Jeb Bush and other guests, plus a cameo from Jon Stewart. His interviewing skills and comedic slant are getting people’s attention. Reaching this next level has been a steady output of content built around ‘getting ready for great’ before his breakaway.

It’s been years preparing for this moment after spending time as an understudy and reporter on the Daily Show. This helped him spin-off his own gig on Comedy Central. Hardly anyone questions whether he was the right one to replace Letterman. And even Jimmy Fallon welcomed him to Network prime time.

Colbert adds “I’m looking forward to being sincerely interested in what (guests) have to say without having to translate it through an idiot’s mouth.” His background is built on improv and reputation built on his real love.
