Howard Schultz & Steph Curry Enjoy the Best Work Life Ever as Masters of Their Game

doc_lg

It was just over a week ago when news hit the wire that Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz would be stepping down. He’s been the head honcho responsible for building the company to its massive presence in the marketplace. In the announcement he described his days at Starbucks as the dream of a lifetime.

While Schultz might be stepping down, Steph Curry just took his team another step up in the annals of NBA history. Having been to the finals four years in a row, they won the last two in back-to-back fashion. Schultz and Curry enjoy the best work life ever on the field of dreams as masters of their game.

For Schultz it’s been about building a world-class brand. For Curry it’s been about building a Warriors team dynasty. Their achievements are so many to mention but what they seem to have in common tells us something about what it takes to be masters of our own game and have the best work life.

Their success reminds us of what it means to act like a player and think like a brand. In our early days of primary/secondary education that’s essentially what we’re learning. In that case it’s a cross between school and sports. But in our adult years it’s a cross between how we develop socially and professionally.

What we learn from Schultz is a sense for how we brand our skills. In the case of Curry we might see how to swag our skills. Those skills have helped to build their competencies into a global franchise and all-star professional. They’ve been through the good, bad & scary and came out ahead by managing:

  1. Passion points vs selling points

Curry’s got game and as a player he thrives on his unique passion points. Schultz’s got mojo as a market leader and helped the biz thrive on its unique selling points. Whether it’s your passion points or selling points these can have different levels of impact starting from the ground-up and starring at the top.

stephencurry2

  1. Bad pain vs bad press

Both had some downtime (or dark time) in their careers. More recently, Curry was out with a sprained ankle. Schultz had to deal with the discrimination incident at a Philly store. Being masters of their game forced them to be ‘twice-baked.’ That’s where you have to grow both personally and professionally.

  1. Skills ballin’ vs niche rollin’

Every year the NBA draft welcomes a new class of players. Some make it through training camp and the Combines to eventual become a household name. A similar journey happens for an emerging brand or ‘on the verge’ artist. What we’ve seen Curry and Schultz do is turn skills into ballin’ and niche into rollin’.

  1. Good fit vs big hit

There’re times we see players on a team for years without making it to the championships. Then they’re traded to another team and somehow things begin to click. Curry hasn’t had a need to be traded and Schultz didn’t jump ship to another brand. They simply became a good fit on the team and a big hit for the fans.

Curry says he’s looking to win a few more rings. Schultz says he’s open to new opportunities in philanthropy and public service. There’re rumors that he might even have an eye on higher office. When their hall-of-fame story is told there’ll be moments when you realize how they enjoyed the best work life.

Tip: Whether it’s becoming a world-class brand or first-rate player, the good ones know how to turn their skills into thrills and their passion points into a big hit.

Lebron James as Rapper, Ice Cube as Baller: The Genius Behind Their Rise to Fame

doc_lg

The NBA season is a few weeks in and looks like the fellas are still working out the kinks. The Golden State Warriors lost their first game on the night they got their championship rings. The Cleveland Cavaliers lost more than three games in a row and fans are wondering what’s going on in the ‘Land.

Well maybe getting ready for Halloween had them a little distracted. James went to his annual costume party dressed-up as the Pennywise clown from the movie ‘It’. Steph Curry rode in to his on a bicycle like another kind of clown himself. James was also seen on Carpool Karaoke with Ice Cube tagging along.

The costumes of James and Curry stood out as the best. But it’s James as rapper and Ice Cube as baller that helps us see what can make our job performance standout. We see them light-up with their unique strengths and take-off with their creative flow. In a sense that’s the genius behind their rise to fame.

Sometimes sport commentators do the game recap. As they review a big play the video graphics will show how the play unfolded. There’re times the player and the path in the graphics will light-up as things take shape. That’s how James and Cube light-up the scene the way video graphics are smart and cool.

The whole Halloween thing might be scary to some. But it’s a fun way for people to show-off their alter-ego in personality. James could easily go as a rapper. He’s always sharing Instagram clips of his rap-alongs. Cube could easily go as a baller since he’s the co-founder of the 3-on-3 basketball league.

ice-cube

There’s something else about how they make performance stand-out. They get to show-off their alter-ego in passion. Plus, they’ll bring gametime effort as a balance between how they light-up their strengths on the work-side and flex their flow on the play-side. That’s why we cheer because their genius got game.

As a blogger I’m always using my unique strengths to drop some lines. I realize in writing that a part of getting through comes from being heard without necessarily being seen. I also have a love for how music can bring creative flow to the script. It’s the same reason why movie trailers use music in their promos.

Some of what makes James light-up is hitting the big shots. What makes Cube light-up is spitting slick rhymes. But it’s in how their ‘genius got game’ that’s helped them rise to a higher level of fame. They’ve taken what they know from their main thing and turned it into movies, merchandise and pulling strings.

Chris Paul from the Houston Rockets tells his story of unique strengths, creative flow and being traded from the LA Clippers. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to uproot his family. His main concern was, in one sense, around ‘happy wife happy life.’ He also didn’t know how his son felt about leaving his friends.

He took his son on signing-day when he was introduced to the media and fans. The moment he walked out and heard the cheers, it caused him and his son to light-up. The look on his son’s face said it all. So whether as po’ folks or ‘just folks,’ great performance is about how we stand-out and light-up the place.

Tip: Your performance stands-out in how you shake-off the doubts and light-up the place so that your genius got game.

Kevin Durant & Lady Gaga Caught the Eyes of Fans with Their Latest Breakout Moves #BigTimeUniversity

A New Way to Shine with Highlights, Insights and Media-bites that’s Exciting (Old-School Flava)

This was one of those much anticipated moments. Where would Kevin Durant play ball next season? Not everybody’s happy that he’s going to the Warriors. Meanwhile, at age 31, Lady Gaga posted that she finally got her driver’s license. Durant & Gaga caught the eyes of fans with their latest breakout moves.

Durant told The Players’ Tribune “moving out of my comfort zone to a new city offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth.” Plus, Gaga posted to social media “I’m free. Rollin’ with the homies.” Sometimes, a big factor in ‘doing you’ is matching your mojo with an important mission.

Sports junkies are trying to get inside Durant’s head. Some think it was a weak decision. But having played with OKC for nine years he gives us a new way to see MOJO as Move:On, Juice:On! A few years ago LeBron James did it in leaving for Miami. He then won his first title and wore the robe of a champion.

Durant’s searching for his first ring. He’s been named league MVP before so that box has been checked. Now he wants to make a fresh start by teaming-up with a new set of NBA fellas. He’s looking for ways to feel like he’s rollin’ with the homies. For ballers, rings and stats are cool. But off-court good times are too.

So the story’s end is yet to be written. Here’s what Gaga also posted on social media in saying “And after I passed my test. PRAISE HIM.” Sometimes another factor in ‘doing you’ is feeling like someone’s looking out for you. Without the church bells, Warriors players made him feel like it’s time to play ball in the Bay.

Folks waited for word from Durant. July 4th fired-off the online rant. Where would he play ball next year? That’s what team GMs did fear. Not all happy people like those in Golden State. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga moved something off her plate. Getting driver’s license finally. Making moves that hit some socially.

Telling The Players Tribune his reason. For going somewhere else next season. Stepping out comfort zone a first step. Contribution and growth to bring more pep. Plus Gaga feeling like she on a roll. With her homies and kindred soul. Big factor in ‘doing you’ right. Is matching mojo to mission that’s out of sight.

Sports junkies trying to scoop his head. Thinking it’s a weak decision instead. Durant did nine years with OKC. Now he wants to be set free. With new way to set MOJO on point. As Move:On and Juice:On to anoint. LeBron going to Miami did it then. Getting title and champion’s robe, remember when?

Durant searching for a first ring. Players know that’s a big thing. Been named league MVP before. That’s already made his box score. Wanting a fresh start in the Bay. Who are we to judge or say? To feel like one of the guys. Did something to open his eyes. Rings and stats are cool. And off-court acting the fool.

Storybook end not out of reach. In time he’ll have something to teach. Gaga giving props along the way. PRAISE HIM for passing the test that day. Maybe another factor in ‘doing you.’ Is knowing someone’s looking out for true. Without church bells ringing loud. Warrior players made him feel Bay-area crowd.

The Golden State Warriors have met a higher standing for their team single-season record. Now they’re getting ready for the playoffs just as others look forward to the Barbershop 3 movie. So Cedric the Entertainer and Regina Hall hope to move things from a past standing to higher main street rep appeal.

According to Cinema Blend, Ced said “I’m one to believe that you just can’t do sequels, just because they’re doing them. That was key for me, is to see, where was the story or where were these people 10 years later.” That’s impact visioning for raising the bottom line from an old standard to a higher box score.

It’s been over a decade since the last movie release. After lower than expected sales, there were some doubts about next steps. That’s why a message from the movie and Cedric is when life knocks us down we need to get back up stronger. A ‘next cut’ can help get us past personal lows and performance woes.

The producer shared how he ditched the fears by looking at the success of other urban-styled movies like The Best Man. So he figure-out how to convince Hollywood execs on taking things to the next level. At the barbershop or salon, that’s like seeing someone leave with a fresh look and wanting the same feeling.

Hall can relate, with many key roles since graduating from NYU. About her 20-year acting career and role in Barbershop, she told the Source “It’s just always wonderful to see people with a lot of talent do great work and expand what they do as artists.” Surely, their success has some next generation street value.

Golden State Warriors show what’s good. Meeting higher standing than others could. Single-season team record for the taking. Getting ready for the playoffs shaking. As folks look to new Barbershop movie. Lots of laughs to have life groovy. Cedric & Hall keeping things real. From old standing to higher rep appeal.

Word from Cinema Blend the other day. Cedric says sequels you don’t do for play. Just because it can mean more fame. That’s not how he sees the game. Key for him is in where story falls. For these people 10 years later calls. Bottom line between old-time reasoning. And higher box score from impact visioning.

Been over a decade since last pic. After low sales from last flick. Some doubts about next steps on the rung. So that future success was not unsung. A message for when life knocks us down. Get back up then wear the crown. Take the ‘next cut’ past personal lows. And flush those stubborn performance woes.

Producer shared how he ditched the fears. Over those up and down years. By looking at folks who had it made. Urban-styled movies were getting paid. Convincing Hollywood execs after a while. Turning things up on next level dial. A barbershop or salon’s good-look feeling. Wanting the same in fresher revealing.

Hall can relate on coming through. With some key roles after leaving NYU. A 20-year acting career since then. Looking back as if to remember when. Cool to work with lots of talent and artist skill. Doing great work to expand the thrill. Ready for the next-gen in street value. With more success on showbiz menu.

It was the NBA buzzer-beater for the ages! The shot was taken over 30 feet from the rim with 0.6 secs left on the clock. That was Steph Curry on the court while Chris Rock held court at the Oscars. He was in rare form during the opening monologue. Rock and Curry made a name for their game with stuff on the line.

The name they made for themselves is “clutch.” During post-game interviews Curry said “I’ve always tried to push the envelope and keep getting better, but a lot has to go right to get to this point.” Curry and Rock show us what can happen when ‘dare greatly’ is something done lately for work goals or leadership roles.

Rock took the stage and dealt with the diversity issue head-on. He mentioned some easy things that could be made to have #OscarsSoWhite be a thing of the past. Sometimes the hardest thing to do when it comes to social issues or work goals is change. It might make things better but it can be hard to foster.

In one sense it’s a matter of getting or seizing opportunity. But in another it’s about making the right choice. With little time left on the clock Curry had to take a shot. Yes, he could have missed it. But if he didn’t take the shot they wouldn’t have had a chance at the win. That’s true for sports and dreams alike.

Curry also set a new record for 3-point shots in a season. That might have been achieved out of a personal challenge. It’s like throwing a challenge flag to yourself, your co-workers or the powers-that-be. Rock and Curry show how to minimize letting ego, excuses or bad experiences block the larger blessings.

NBA buzzer-beater of the ages. With another shot from Curry that amazes. Taken over 30 feet from the rim. With 0.6 secs, game on the limb. Steph Curry among the best modern-day ballers. As Chris Rock held court at the Oscars. Doing it big in their main thing. When stuff’s on the line for the gold bling.

Showing up on-time and in the clutch. For them it’s not asking much. Post-game interview giving us a feel. For how Curry turns his wheel. Pushing the envelope to get better. Has to be right point to flash go-getter. It’s what happens when people can dare greatly. Doing it for work goals or leadership roles lately.

Rock took stage and dealt his cards. On diversity beyond the barnyards. Giving some changes that could be made. So that Oscars no longer gets shade. Change is hard to do even with social vision. Or workplace goals driven by a mission. Change to make things a little better. But can be very hard to foster.

Often a matter of opportunity seizing. Or primetime performance breezing. Making the right choice at right time. Being able to celebrate past lemons or lime. Little time left on clock for a shot. Could have missed but hitting it was hot. True for sports and dreams anew. Even though at times you can feel a bit blue.

Curry gets in the 3-point record books. Shots that hit net like catchy song hooks. A personal challenge good for motivation. To self, friends and across the nation. Like throwing a flag to the ground. Picking it up as lost & found. Minimize ego, excuses and bad breaks. Worth it to not block blessings for dream sakes.

It’s that time where people get to celebrate and elevate. A lot’s going on from the recording studio to the basketball court to the college halls. Taylor Swift is selling-out records. Stephen Curry is turning-out shots. And Tracee Ellis Ross gets an honorary degree. It’s all good for brains, beauty, ballers and beats.

Ross was ecstatic about the honor from her alma mater Brown University. She was among six alums who’ve ‘got game’ in their own fields. Her honorary doctorate degree was given because of her “grace, talent and strong sense of self, passion for self-expression, and pushing the boundaries of imagination.”

That’s true for Ross, the co-star of Black-ish on ABC. It might even carryover to others whose greatness is tied to the fact that they got goals. Just ask the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers who’re expected to meet in the NBA finals. Their sheer will and determination is nothing to hate but appreciate.

Curry returned to the court in game 4 of the Western Conference finals after a scary fall. Lebron James stayed on the court in game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals while battling fatigue and leg cramps. For Curry, James and others with next level dreams, it’s all about where their ‘A-game’ meets their ‘B-side.’

Taylor Swift from her recent Billboard Awards coronation is one of the hottest music artists right now. Stephen Curry’s got a champion’s heart after being named regular season MVP. For Ross, her honorary promotion to Ph.D. long after her own graduation is one that now allows her to be called Dr. Ross!

Time for winners to celebrate. As rising stars get to elevate. Lot’s going on from the recording studio. College halls and b-ball courts in the barrio. Taylor Swift albums got the hots. Stephen Curry making impossible shots. Tracee Ellis Ross with honorary degree feat. Good for brains, beauty, ballers and beat.

Ross ecstatic about recent honor. Given by Brown University her alma mater.  Among six other alums who’ve ‘got game.’ In their own fields they’ve made a name. Honorary doctorate not at all about race. But for strong sense of self, talent and grace. Passion for putting imagination in its right place.

True for Ross, co-star of ABC’s Black-ish. And those masters of their own fetish. Might carryover to greatness on display. Tied to goals that will expire in May. Ask the Warriors or Cavaliers as expected rivals. Since they’re about to reach the NBA finals. Sheer will and determination simply crucial.

Curry returned to court in game four. Hoping to even the score. James stayed on court in game 3. Battling fatigue, leg cramps and making a plea. For Curry and others with next level dreams. It means playing ball like past championship teams. Where their ‘A-game’ meets their ‘B-side.’ And fans get to enjoy the ride.

Swift gets latest Billboard’s coronation. One of the hottest in music compilation. Stephen Curry can relate to music’s pop. As NBA regular season MVP he’s on top. So Ross gets promotion to Ph.D. rank. Nothing to do with sales in the bank. Now called Dr. Ross in some circles. Long after her graduation chronicles.
