A Cool Way for Flexing Style, Game & Soul in How We Roll (Old-School Flava)

It’s been a crazy past few days in sports. Things began with news that Tony Romo would retire from football. He’s played with the Cowboys for over a decade and will quickly move to the broadcast booth. Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook and Sergio Garcia score big points and reach high marks in a tight game.

Talking with the NY Times Magazine, Thunder’s coach Mo Cheeks said of Westbrook “He’s a driven man, he’s a very disciplined person, never late, always on time. I don’t know many with that explosiveness.” Cheeks might know 3 goals that Westbrook set to light a fuse under his dreams and shine like a star.

It’s a case of shooting for those first-time goals. It’s the first time that an NBA player has averaged a triple-double since Oscar Robinson. For Garcia, not only was it his first time winning the Masters but also winning one of golf’s major events. This time he dug-in to win in an exciting 18th-hole playoff.

When Robinson set the record in the 1961-1962 season it was the last time a player had a triple-double season average. The last time someone from Spain won the Masters was in 1999. So they may have had a goal where the ‘last time’ a thing’s been done got them to a point this season of really feeling it boy.

With Westbrook and Garcia playing the games they love, it’s not hard to find times of ups and downs. Some thought Westbrook would slump after Durant left for the Warriors. But with the days as a pro moving along, having the sense of a ‘last chance’ to do something can get folks going to be at their best.

Been a crazy past few days. With sports moves and breakout plays. Began with Romo to retire. Then going to work as TV hire. Was a Cowboy over a decade. Now finding different way to get paid. Meanwhile Westbrook and Garcia score big points in game. Reaching high marks in career and fame.

In NY Times Magazine story. Telling how they shoot for glory. Thunder’s coach Mo Cheeks saying. How Westbrook is driven in practice and playing. Disciplined, never late. Always on time at departure gate. Explosive on the court in many roles. Light a fuse in his dreams and star goals.

Case of first-time goals it seems. How he stands-out from other teams. Averaging tripled-double since Oscar did. Now he’s on the all-time grid. For Garcia a first-time Masters win. Can feel the happiness in their grin. Westbrook a first-time in his prime. Garcia winning 18th-hole playoff in primetime.

When Oscar set record back in the day. Didn’t know who would come this way. Last time of triple-double average season. Gave Westbrook a hunch and a reason. Masters win last time by Spain. Was 1999 to make it plain. This last-time thing got them to a point. Where they were feeling it boy in the joint.

With both playing the games they love. Something came over them like a dove. Not hard to find those ups and downs. Thinking Westbrook would slump was word around towns. Their days as a pro moving along. They wanted to have a fresh song. Maybe ‘last chance’ before they rest. To do something at their best.

With Higher Hopes, Bolder Dreams and Greater Teams (Old-School Flava)

These days it seems celebrities and government officials love Twitter. From the Pope to POTUS, they’re sending updates on their comings and goings. Investors see an opening for the social media site to make money. Some think Jack Dorsey’s got his mac back and wants Twitter to rule the Wall Street world.

Dorsey is company co-founder. An angel investor tells the Business Insider “Twitter is not growing as fast as it could because the company doesn’t think big enough. It could be the next Google if it wanted to be.” There goes a great headline on the top three ways for raising performance ranking and market status.

He’s back as CEO having come full circle. In July he returned as interim and the search committee saw how he was an effective team leader, had product vision and could recruit top talent. Leader in your lane, vision for all seasons, talent for the journey: three qualities for getting ahead even if having to restart.

Dorsey first saw the service as a way to provide message updates to industry insiders. For him, this effort was about commanding his own lane in the social media landscape. It was at a time when other sites like Facebook were beginning to carve-out a user base beyond Myspace. Some thrived and others dived.

After being ousted as CEO in 2008 Dorsey might have seen it as a shift in season. He went on to launch another tech biz which handles credit card payment services using smart phones. So celebrities and biz folks like Steve Jobs and Jack Dorsey have had seasons in their careers that helped to boost their status.

Seems celebs and politicos love to tweet. Posting stuff from their daily beat. The Pope and even POTUS on deck. With updates on their global trek. Investors see some daylight. To put Twitter back in the spotlight. Some think Dorsey’s got his mac back. Wants to rule the Wall Street Rat Pack.

He’s an original co-founder. Now covered by the Business Insider. They say site not growing as fast as could. Company not thinking big enough as it could. The next Google something not far-fetched. Can get there if they stretched. Great headline on getting ahead. In the job or marketplace spread.

Back as CEO is like full circle move. Returned as interim before getting in the groove. Search committee saw effective leader. With product vision and talent recruiter. Leader in your lane, vision for all seasons. Talent for the journey among the reasons. Good for playing the part. Even if having to do a restart.

Saw the service for sending message updates. For industry insiders and other future greats. Effort about commanding his own lane. On the social media landscape plane. At a time when Facebook was carving-out new users. There was Myspace and others that became losers.

Ousted as CEO in 2008 or so. Might have sensed it was good time to go. Went on to launch another tech biz. Just shows he’s that much of a whiz. For credit card payments using smart phone. He was very much in the zone. Whether celebs or Dorsey or Steve Jobs. Seasons helped boost profile and money in globs.

The graduation season might be winding down. Many have walked across the stage to collect their diploma. Now they’re ready to take things to the next level. This is true even for those long done with formal education. Case in point, Steve Harvey continues to build brand identity and a river of dreams.

He’s heard on radio, seen of TV and has become a best-selling author. More recently he’s expanded his Family Feud hosting gig with a celebrity edition. He leads his mentoring program that pours into a river of dreams. All of this has come about by building brand identity around comedy, personality and serenity.

Harvey might say living the dream is all about packaging your passion. Some in comedy build their passion around jokes for making people laugh. Others do so by making a fool of themselves or like Amy Schumer making silly salty. But full-throttle passion for most folks is where skills and thrills runneth over.

Then there’re people who package their dream around their pain. Richard Pryor was one of the best at making people laugh at times he may have cried. Others like Iyanla Vanzant package their dream around explaining their pain. Harvey jokes about embracing his pain during the three years he was homeless.

Dream achievers remind us that when passion and pain are in the mix it opens up new possibilities. In some sense this is what they learned from living their dream. You might have to test the waters or go to “a place without no name.” When you get there your story will be one that moves people and the market.

Graduation season winding down. Parties had in many a town. They took the stage for their diploma. Went out to eat and savor the aroma. Putting things on a next level track. Knowing there’s no turning back. True for those in careers or on teams. As Steve Harvey builds brand identity and river of dreams.

Heard on radio, as seen on tv. And best-selling author respectfully. Lately hosting Family Feud celebrity edition. Put together like a man on a mission. Leads mentoring program for turning boys to men. Living his dream as a top ten. All this by building his brand identity. With comedy, personality and serenity.

Harvey might say it’s about packaging your passion. Whether in comedy or other profession. Some do jokes just for laugh-a-lots. Others build around a certain life plot. Making a fool of themselves or being salty. Maybe all of the above and a little naughty. Where skills and thrills runneth good under or over forty.

Some package their dream around pain. Richard Pryor among the best when sane. Making people laugh about how he cried. Stretching the punchline in ways he didn’t hide. Other like Iyanla explain their pain. In letting it support their gain. Harvey jokes embrace homelessness. His pain for three years of restlessness.

Dream achievers know the score. Passion and pain opens them up for more. So the possibilities are awaiting. That’s what dreams are good for teaching. Having to test the waters and the game. In going to “a place without no name.” What you’ll gain is a story. That moves people, the market and personal glory.
