It seems like she’s everywhere! She’s an American Idol judge and can also be seen on the big screen. Her music sells in the millions getting radio airplay from coast to coast and on pop/latino stations. In between time she’s also a mom. J-Lo has mastered her brand of ‘sex appeal and keeping it real.’

Many might remember her early days as a ‘fly girl’ dancer on the variety show In Living Color. Because of her passion she’s gone on to sing, act and serve as a commercial product endorser. Some might understand passion in the space of getting ‘layed.’ But J-lo might also see it in the face of getting paid.

She has used her big break in showbiz to become an international icon. Over the years she’s had a few sour notes along the way. Her success is also seen in how she ‘packages her pain.’ She shares more in her memoirs, not to complain but to explain that mistakes don’t have to be criminal nor bad-breaks final.

In a recent interview she reflected on her days growing-up in the Bronx. On the corner she’s seen as ‘Jenny from the block.’ But with Madison Avenue advertisers she’s more like ‘Jenny the brand.’ Her success reflects how she has embraced her passion as well as her pain to realize major progress.

J-lo has raised her game to the point where her career has bounce-back-ability. Even with the setbacks in failed marriages or missed opportunities she’s still a hot commodity. She has spread her passion far and wide. Even through the pain she has gone from ‘around the way girl’ to her own dream world.

It seems like she’s everywhere! A main attraction let’s make that clear. American Idol Judge front and center. Also the big screen and fashionista. Music that sells in the millions across nations. Radio airplay coast to coast on pop/latino stations. J-lo known for sexy brand appeal. As much as for keeping it real.

Let’s flashback to her days as a ‘fly girl’ dancer. The variety show In Living Color was her answer. Using her passion to also sing, act and do much more. You’ve seen her pics at the department store. Some see passion in the space of getting ‘layed.’ But others like J-lo might see passion in the face of getting paid.

Rising in showbiz to international icon. J-lo knows about bringing home the bacon. A few sour notes along the way. Packaging her pain in what she has to say. Memoir wasn’t written just to complain. But in her wising-up to explain. That a mistake doesn’t have to be criminal. And bad breaks don’t have to be final.

Imagine before stardom she was a law clerk. These days she’s getting paid for her celebrity work. On the corner she’s ‘Jenny from the block’ when you shake her hand. But with Madison Avenue she’s more like ‘Jenny the brand.’ Success is in how she’s embraced passion and pain. To turn progress into major gain.

J-lo raised her game to new heights. Career bounce-back-ability took her to new flights. Even with setbacks, failed marriages and missed opportunity. She still has it going on as a hot commodity. Spreading her passion as an ‘around the way’ girl. Between the scripts and tips in her own dream world.

This week the nation’s eyes were on Washington DC and President Obama’s State of the Union address. Last week many eyes including the President’s were focused on El Capitan’s Dawn Wall in the Yosemite National Park. Obama gave props to Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson for reaching the mountaintop.

These friends have been working on a lifelong dream of free-climbing this 3000-ft peak. It’s something they’ve worked towards from childhood. Things took-on greater focus and preparation for Caldwell in 2007. Then in 2009 Jorgenson asked to join him. As they say the rest is history, squashing the mystery.

During the 19-day climb there were twists and slips. Jorgeson had 10 failed attempts to cross a certain part of the rock climb. But it was perseverance and their commitment to lifelong learning that brought success. Jorgeson even studied video of his 10 slip-ups and realized the adjustment he had to make.

That was a game-changer leading to a breakthrough. As Jorgeson made headway, Caldwell waited so they would reach the top together. That’s a sign of a lifelong bond they’ve developed. It’s a friendship that has matured over time just like a savings bond. Even through upturns and downturns their bond paid off.

When asked why they did this project one said “I love to dream big” while the other said “I wanted to know what I’m capable of.”  These were two of the many factors they shared for getting to the next level. Not everybody has to be a daredevil to get there. But getting there does take a level of dare.

This week the nation has eyes on Washington DC. It’s President Obama as State of the Union MC. Last week many eyes focused on El Capitan mountain climbers. They held our attention as daredevil show-stoppers. To them the President’s tweet gave much props. For reaching the Yosemite Park mountaintop.

Friends who’ve been working on a lifelong dream. Of climbing the 3000-ft peak with the help of their team. Something that captured them in early childhood. Maybe even as a feat that challenged their manhood. Greater focus for Caldwell in making history. Then for Jorgeson in squashing the mystery.

A 19-day climb with twists and slips. It was the climax of many previous trips. Jorgeson with 10 failed attempts in getting across. Part of the rock that could have been a loss. With perseverance and commitment to lifelong learning. Studying video of his 10 slip-ups moved him closer to his yearning.

That was a game-changer kind of breakthrough. Making headway past his fingers being black and blue. Caldwell was out-front in their daily trek. So he waited for Jorgeson thinking “what the heck!” A friendship that matured through upturns and downturns. A dream coming to fruition like a savings bond’s returns.

In being asked why they did this together. “A love to dream” and self-awareness” couldn’t say it better. Two of many thoughts they shared as next level factors. Means a lot coming from them since they’re not actors. Don’t have to be a daredevil in order to get there. But getting to the top does take a level of dare.

Dr. King’s Legacy Bigger than a Local March and Defined by a Larger Message

“One dream can change the world!” That caption comes from the new ‘Selma’ movie. Executive Produced by Oprah and others, it relives the moments surrounding the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama. However, Dr. King’s legacy is bigger than a local march and is defined by a larger message.

In one respect the march was a wake-up call to America regarding social conditions of the time. King and others wanted the ‘powers that be’ to see that all was not well with the soul of America. Maybe today’s wake-up call is to address some of the ongoing social, structural and self-starter issues that persist.

During the 60s movement, many events were demonstrations of solidarity. People from different walks of life would come together, sometimes holding hands and singing ‘we shall overcome.’ But a larger point was in how they’d link-up hearts and minds across friends and family. That was their ‘social media.’

They also had to deal with different motives and motivations of those on the frontlines as well as behind the scenes. Some would turn-up looking for confrontation while others were focused on mobilization. So the question each person had to answer then and what we must consider today is “Turn up for what?”

Mark Twain once said “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why!” Well, there are many other important days of our lives. So Dr. King would want us to truly wake-up to a larger sense of purpose, so that when we link-up it’s a matter of turning-up for good.

Change the world with one dream! That’s a snapshot of the ‘Selma’ movie theme. Executive Produced by Oprah and other high rollers. It relives the ’65 march among the Alabama crimson tiders. Well, Dr. King’s legacy bigger than a local march. Defined by a larger message and conviction like blue-jeans starch.

A wake-up call for America to say the least. Social conditions at the time weren’t always a feast. King and others wanted ‘powers that be’ to see. Some people were still fighting to be free. Not all was well with the American soul. So the ‘urgency of now’ became his goal. Searching for solutions to let the good times roll.

At times the 60s movement was a show of solidarity. Also a time for building civil rights clarity. People from different walks of life coming together. Walking hand-in-hand as sister and brother. Singing songs of hope to help them overcome. They’d link-up hearts and minds like a social-media spectrum.

With different motives and motivations along the way. On the frontlines or behind-the-scenes ‘plug and play.’ Some would turn-up looking for confrontation. Others there more focused on mobilization. So the question each had to ask then and even now. “Turn-up for what?” in order to endure anyhow.

“Two most important days” Mark Twain once said. “Day you are born and day you know why” before dead. Many other important days when all’s said and done. Even as you squeeze-in some R&R fun. King’s dream is that to a larger purpose we wake-up. So that for a greater good we’re linked and turn-up.
