A New Way to Shine with Highlights, Insights and Media-bites that’s Exciting (Old-School Flava)
The stage was set for a parade of graduates. One by one they’d step forward to receive their diplomas. But first they had to sit through a series of speeches. The headline speaker was some well-known public figure. Cory Booker, Yes! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, For sure! They spoke, folks listened and then walked!
Booker said, “Stay faithful because you have come this far by faith—faith in each other, faith in yourselves, faith in our country…you may not be called to change the whole world, but to one person, you could make a world of difference.” That’s a real important leadership value for getting what you put in.
Before receiving his honorary degree Abdul-Jabbar poked fun at how social media has taken over in pop culture. He used his own journey to sell the idea of connecting to new opportunities. Whether it’s in a job, career or vocation, the next level ought to be less about default setting and more about an inner calling.
Twenty years ago social media didn’t exist. Today there’s plenty to go around. For some people it’s hard to imagine life without ‘likes.’ Booker is no millennial but as a social media pro he uses social savvy to keep his work in the culture flow. But he knows that ignorant enthusiasm doesn’t produce social impact.
After their commencement moments Booker and Abdul-Jabbar were back at work. The business of the Senate has him focused on justice reforms. While for Abdul-Jabbar, he’s writing a comic book. They bring an approach to work that’s on the opposite ends of the spectrum, but in many ways it’s worth fighting for.

A New Way to Shine With Highlights, Insights and Media-bites that’s Exciting (New-School Flava)
Stage set for the college grads. Robes covered up their tats and fads. One by one taking the stage. As they turn life’s next page. With diplomas received in hand. Speeches tell them to take a stand. Well-known public figures give headline talk. Booker, Abdul-Jabbar and others spoke, listened then they walk.
Booker said to stay faithful sister and brother. Come this far by faith in each other. Faith in self and country too. To change the world or point of view. Make a difference one person at a time. Turn lemons into lemonade and lemonade into wine. A leadership value for the strong. Get what you put in after long.
Abdul-Jabbar gets honorary degree. Not paid for but for free. Poked fun at social media’s cultural pop. How things have gone over the top. Used his story to pitch another way. Where opportunities come with more pay. Whether job, career or higher vocation. An inner calling that feels like recreation.
Twenty years ago social media wasn’t around. Maybe only in the underground. Hard to imagine no ‘likes’ in their stable. Even for millennials who’ve ditched their cable. Booker’s no young-un but a social media pro. Which tends to keep his work in the flow. With less ignorant enthusiasm to showcase a way to grow.
After commencement back at doing what they do. Working, creating, bringing change through. Business of the Senate his special place. Focused on justice reforms keeping pace. Approach to work on opposite ends. Worth fighting for is the message each sends. With plenty time left for family and friends.
Tip: Getting out of the work day what we put in takes attitude and follow-thru that’s worth fighting for.
Talkback: How much do graduates really pay attention to or remember commencement speeches?
